The Colonial Ancestors and Twentieth Century Descendants of Samuel A. Nichols (1787-1866) of Howard County, Maryland - Joseph Howard Nichols, Jr . Twenty-five years of careful research have gone into this impressive and well-documented collection of information about the Nichols family in Maryland. A founding father of Howard County, Samuel A. Nichols was a patriot who served as a soldier in the War of 1812. After his marriage to Susan Hardey in 1825, he occupied various civic service positions. He was instrumental in the building of many of Howard County's schools and roads. Maryland historians may find the biographical material about this important figure valuable. Those with a genealogical interest in this man will be impressed with the 300-year, 12-generation, 1,100-descendant line followed in these pages. Presented in the easy-to-read format of the New England Historical and Genealogical Register, this genealogy includes the names of spouses and their parents, important dates and places, occupations and brief family histories. Eleven pages of photographs and a map showing the 17th- and 18th-century residences of the Nicholses are cross-referenced to the appropriate individuals' register numbers. Brief genealogies of such related Maryland families as Dent, Edelen, Hardey, Morris and Robertson are included. The author has also included a 140-page alphabetical and chronological listing of all the Nicholses found in the course of his research who were unable to be positively linked to the Samuel A. Nichols family. These entries include the reference source with a summary of the information contained therein. Along with the historic information on Howard County, much contemporary background on Anne Arundel, St. Mary's and Prince George's Counties is included. A name and place index contains over 4,500 entries, including slave names and homesteads. 1996, 6x9, cloth, index, illus., map, 498 pp.
