This extensive history is divided into three parts. Part One presents the history of the Indian tribes of the New York area. It covers Indian customs and social relationships; Indian relationships with the French, English and Dutch settlers and colonists; Indian attacks against and peace negotiations and treaties with the settlers; and the Jesuit Missions among the Indians. Part Two covers Chenango County, its early history and settlement. Each town within the county has its own chapter devoted to its history and biographies of prominent citizens. These towns include Afton, Bainbridge, Coventry, Greene, Guilford, Oxford, Smithville, Norwich, Preston, McDonough, German, New Berlin, North Norwich, Plymouth, Pharsalia, Pitcher, Columbus, Sherburne, Smyrna, Otselic and Lincklaen. Part Three covers the history of Madison County and its settlement and development. Madison County towns include Brookfield, Hamilton, Lebanon, Georgetown, De Ruyter, Madison, Eaton, Nelson, Cazenovia, Smithfield, Fenner, Stockbridge, Lenox and Sullivan. The table of contents includes a list of illustrations and a list of biographical sketches. Rather than an index, this volume includes a list by county and town of all citizens who assisted and contributed toward the publication of this volume.
