Virginians and West Virginians, 1607-1870, Volume 3 [2 volumes]

The data in this volume have been abstracted from the two biographical volumes of the three-volume work, History of West Virginia, Old and New, and West Virginia Biography (American Historical Society, Inc., Chicago and New York, 1923). These original volumes contain abundant genealogical information supplied by the families themselves, but the information has been largely inaccessible to family history researchers for two reasons: these volumes lack a suitable index, and so few copies of the original work are in existence (copies are available only at a few large libraries). Col. Wardell’s alphabetically arranged work provides abstracts of the genealogical data for all persons mentioned in these two volumes, most being natives of Virginia or West Virginia; the data on those persons who came to Virginia or West Virginia from other states or countries are also given. In the early 1600s, some families immigrated to Virginia and these entries include some data on their predecessors. About 32,000 individuals are identified. Entries include the following information to the extent that this information is given in the original text: full name of the subject, date and place of birth, names of parents and spouses, residence and occupation. For each entry, the volume and page number of the data source are indicated.
