Black Genesis : A Resource Book for African-American
Genealogy, 2nd Edition |
When Black Genesis was originally published in 1978,
it was the first book to provide researchers with
information on resources and a methodology specific
to African-American genealogy. Now, owing to the
unprecedented growth of interest in the subject,
this landmark publication has been completely
updated and is once again the premier guide to
African-American genealogy. The 2nd edition of Black
Genesis provides guidance not only to the same basic
resources presented in the original edition but also
to a substantial amount of additional material. The
original goal, however, remains the same--to
introduce the novice and professional researcher to
African-American genealogical research methods and
resources.
Some 100 pages larger than the first edition, the
2nd edition of Black Genesis boasts a new format
that makes locating resources pertaining to slaves
and free blacks in the United States easier than
ever. Part I provides an overview of general
research principles and methodology, while Part II
contains a rundown of specific resources for all
fifty states, Canada, and the West Indies. Under
each location, the information is organized by the
following categories: Important Dates, State
Archives, Census Records, State and County Records,
Cemetery and Church Records, Military Records,
Newspapers, Manuscript Sources (personal papers,
slave records, and diaries), Internet Resources,
Research Contacts, and Bibliography. Resources
described include research guides, published
genealogies, community studies on African-American
families and, most importantly, original research
material that can be found in national, state,
county, and city archives, and in historical
societies and libraries.
Author James M. Rose, Ph.D., is the holder of the
first doctorate in the United States in
African-American Genealogy, as well as the author of
a number of books on African-American genealogy. In
the 1970s he served as a research consultant with
Alex Haley and, with co-author Alice Eichholz,
founded the Ethnic Genealogy Research Center at
Queens College (N.Y.).
Alice Eichholz, Ph.D., C.G., is the Director of
Lifelong Learning at Union Institute & University, a
nationally known researcher, an author and lecturer
in family history, and the editor of Ancestry's Red
Book: American State, County, and Town Sources. |

Free Some Day: The African-American Families of
Monticello |
Although Thomas Jefferson, author of the words "All
men are created equal," was a lifelong enemy of the
institution of slavery, he considered over six
hundred human beings his legal possessions over the
course of his long life. Building on Stanton's
highly acclaimed Slavery at Monticello, this
fascinating work highlights the stories of six
enslaved families who lived and worked at Monticello
and provides general information on events and
issues that affected the entire African-American
community. |

Root & Branch: African Americans in New York and
East Jersey, 1613-1863 |
In this remarkable book, Graham Hodges presents a
comprehensive history of African Americans in New
York City and its rural environs from the arrival of
the first Arfircan-a sailor marooned on Manhattan
Island in 1613 to the bloody Draft Riots of 1863.
Throughout, he explores the intertwined themes of
freedom and servitude, city and countryside, and
work, religion, and resistance that shaped black
life in the region through two and a half centuries.
Hodges chronicles the lives of the first free black
settlers in the dutch-ruled city, gradual slide into
enslavement after the british takeover, the fierce
era of slavery, and the painfully slow process of
emancipation. He pays particular attention to the
black religious experience in all its complexity and
to the vibrant slave culture that was shaped on the
streets and in the taverns. Together, Hodges shows,
these two potent forces helped fuel the kong and
arduous pilgrimage to liberty. |

San Francisco Ship Passenger Lists: Volume II
[1850-51] |
Volume II is based on completely different sources
than the first volume in the series, which covered
the years 1850-1864, and it encompasses an
additional 16,500 passenger arrivals at San
Francisco Bay during the 20-month period from April
1850 to November 1851. Most of these individuals, in
the author's words," had come to the West in search
of the golden goose who had laid the golden egg."
Most would not find it, of course, but would remain
in California or migrate to the Oregon territory to
take up other commercial or agricultural pursuits.
The passengers named in Volume II came from all
parts of the United States, as well as from Europe,
although the majority were probably from the East
Coast of the U.S. The passenger lists themselves are
arranged in chronological order, and, typically,
each passenger list is introduced with the following
notations: name of ship, type of ship, port of
embarkation, date of arrival, name of captain,
description of cargo, and notes concerning the
passage (date of departure, ports of call, length of
voyage, and names of passengers who died en route,
with their places of residence and dates of death).
The list of passengers follows and sometimes
identifies accompanying family members. Rounding out
the volume are the author's introduction, a key to
abbreviations, a list of the shipping lines that
sailed/steamed on the Pacific, and superlative name
and subject indexes. |

The Bear and the Cub. The Site of the First English
Theatrical Performance in America 1665-1965 |
There was a play, the first English play to be
presented in America. The Bear and Cub engaged the
interest and talents of actors Cornelious Watkinson,
Philip Howard and William Darby. Considerable
criticism of the play brought by Edward Martin
possibly a Quaker led to the suspension of the
performances.
300 years after the first English play was
performed, Dr. Susie Ames, the Shore's own historian
examined the case and worte the paper. The only part
of the story which seems to leave questions is where
was the play performed |

Proprietors' Records of the Town of Waterbury,
Connecticut, 1677-1761
|
The city of Waterbury, in New Haven County,
Connecticut, was incorporated in 1686. The
establishment of Waterbury, or Mattatuck, as the
town was originally known, grew out of the efforts
of a number of inhabitants of Farmington,
Connecticut, who, in 1673, petitioned the General
Court in Hartford for permission to launch a
settlement "at a place called by the Indians
Matitacocke." The volume at hand, which was
transcribed and edited by Katharine Prichard from
original sources, makes available the records of the
Proprietors of Waterbury from 1677 to 1761. Ms.
Prichard's transcription is divided into the
following key elements: orders and letters,
1673-1687; first proprietors' book, 1677-1722; later
records, 1722-1761; and grants of land, 1682-1709.
In the aggregate, the Proprietors' Records document
the sectioning off and dispersing of lots throughout
the emerging town of Waterbury. In one entry we see
the order given to survey or measure off land; in
the next entry lots are being awarded, by lottery,
to qualified persons; and in still other instances
we see the Proprietors intervening to settle
property disputes of one kind or another. The great
virtue of the transcription is that it places
thousands of Connecticut colonists in Waterbury at a
given point in time. These several thousand
individuals may readily be found in any one of a
score of lists scattered throughout the volume or in
the index at the back of the book. By any reckoning,
this wonderful transcription must be considered a
starting point in Waterbury genealogy.

CD: Census Microfilm Records: Connecticut and Rhode
Island, 1850 |
This Family Archive, a 4-CD set, includes not only
an index to the Connecticut and Rhode Island
portions of the 1850 census but scanned images of
the actual records themselves. Often referred to as
the first modern census, the 1850 census employed
improved techniques for collecting information. For
the first time, enumerators were provided printed
instructions that explained their responsibilities,
census procedures, and the intent behind census
questions. These instructions accounted for a
greater degree of accuracy in the census record.
This Family Archive references nearly 141,000
Connecticut heads of household and 51,000 Rhode
Island heads of household who were counted in this
especially valuable census. For your convenience,
Broderbund has provided an electronic name index
that allows you to search for your ancestors quickly
and easily.
