Only five copies were made. In 1976, the second edition was printed by the Sonoma County Genealogical Society (SCGS). Three cemeteries were added, for a total of 11,996 names, and 14 more pages of death notices were added from newspapers for the period 1856-1874. All 105 copies of the 1976 edition were quickly sold to local genealogists and historians. It is the intent of the present printing to point out problems in the earlier editions, to offer more reasonable data if found, and to encourage the user to do further research.

This book is arranged alphabetically by cemetery, and alphabetically by surname within each cemetery. Each cemetery listing may consist of either one or two tables. The first table contains the information read from tombstones in the original study. The second table, if present, is an addendum which contains additional information from the text about any of the entries in the first table or, in some cases, new information. Some cemeteries, especially the larger ones, may include a family plot designation. Data is organized by columns, as follows: Surname, Given Names, Family Plot, Parents, Spouse, Date of Birth, Date of Death, Age (year, month, day), and comments. School registrars were required to file their reports with the county superintendent of schools, and their compliance was assured by withholding funds from schools that did not comply. For all students recorded, it contains the name of student, school attended, date of first and last school record, and in most cases, the age and grade of the student at entry and/or exit. It provides a broad selection of the public schools in Sonoma County, California, at the time of recording. The genealogical value of these records is similar, in many ways, to the value of tax records. They place a child in a certain school at a certain date. Because of the sporadic nature of the attendance of some children, one might assume they were either the children of migrant workers or of farm families where they were needed to help on the farm. Copies of the original registers are located in the History and Genealogy Library, Santa Rosa, California, and in the Sonoma County archives. A list of schools is included in this study, and a list of those not included can be found at the History and Genealogy Library. An extra bonus is that in some, but not in all cases, birth dates, information on transfer to or from another location, and notes about irregular or intermittent attendance are included. Visiting each cemetery confirmed its actual location and existence, and gave the author an opportunity to talk to local residents about its history. These records cover the period from 1878 to 1926 and give the names of persons who asked for money from the county because they had no other means of financial support. For the most part, these are the people who have "fallen through the cracks" of genealogical research. Most of them owned no property and had fallen on hard times because their primary provider had become ill, died, deserted them, was in jail, or was just too old to be gainfully employed. The format for data presentation is in two volumes. Book One gives information about the applicant, his or her family, and circumstances of the request. Book Two gives a listing of the taxpayers who supported the applicant on his/her request for county funds. The taxpayers who signed the applications for indigents are important because the applications provide a substitute census for the county in lieu of the 1890 federal census, most of which was destroyed by fire. Of the 16,000 signatures, over 8,000 of them occur in the period from 1881 to 1909.

Sonoma County [California] Genealogical Society

2006, 8.5" x 11", paper, alphabetical, 2 Books, 436 pp.

ISBN: 9780788443107

101-S4310

Local newspapers furnish a wealth of genealogical data and often help fill in the gaps in official records. Any person who was twenty-one years of age, or head of a family, or met certain military requirements was eligible to apply for a homestead. The homesteader had to live on the land continuously and cultivate it for a period of five years in order to obtain the patent. Any person who had borne arms against the U.S., or given aid and comfort to its enemies, was not eligible. This was a significant point since the Homestead Act was passed during the years of the Civil War. The patents read much like any deed. One of the first statutes passed by the California legislature was "An Act Concerning the Official Bonds of Officers," which set out the basic law governing bonds of both state and county public officials. Before taking office, a public official, known as the "principal" of the bond, was required to pledge a certain amount of money, $100 to $100,000 depending on the office, which would be forfeited to the State of California should the public official not faithfully perform the duties of his or her office. They can, however, be hard to locate and, once found, difficult to navigate, especially since most are not indexed. For these reasons they are probably the most under-utilized of all genealogical records. The Sonoma County Genealogical Society and the author of this publication have made some of the early Sonoma County court records more easily accessible to the researcher by indexing the records of several 19th-century Sonoma County courts. This publication adds to the series by presenting an index to the County Court records of Sonoma County.

The County Courts of California were established in 1849 and initially served only to hear appeals from the various Justices' Courts. Over the years the California Legislature granted the County Courts their own original jurisdiction over cases such as those involving insolvency, and, in 1864, criminal cases when the Courts of Sessions were abolished. They also handled applications to change names, applications by women to function as sole traders, adoptions, and naturalizations. The County Courts were abolished in 1879 by the second California Constitution of that year, and the Superior Courts assumed their functions.

This publication comprises four sections: three tables of County Court cases (Old Series, New Series, and unnumbered) and an all-name index.
