Enterprise Baptist Church at Wood County, Texas: September 1890 through October 1934

Mt. Enterprise Baptist Church was organized September 14, 1890 and has been in continuous operation since. The church began in a building on what is now County Road 2351, and went under the name Mt. Enterprise Baptist Church of Christ for the first sixteen years or so, until it became known as Mt. Enterprise Baptist Church. The church moved to its present location in the year 1952. Wood County, Texas, was organized in 1850. In December 1878, the county courthouse burned and all records were lost. Some of the deeds were presented for re-recording, but most county records begin with January 1879. Furthermore, there is no 1890 census for this area, so the church records will be of considerable interest to any genealogists researching this county. Numerous names and lists of names can be found on these pages. The first part of this book looks at church minutes from September 1890 to August 1916, and the second part covers the minutes from September 1916 to October 1934. Harford, or Old Brick Baptist, Church is located in Harford County, Maryland, approximately midway between Jarrettsville and Upper Cross Roads on Baldwin Mill Road (Route 136) near Putnam Road. At the time of its establishment the church was in Baltimore County, the part that later became Harford County in 1773. The building itself was constructed circa 1755, but tradition states there was a Baptist congregation in this area as early as 1732. Although this date is posted on the sign at the entrance to the church property, it cannot be documented because church books prior to 1803 are not extant. Mr. Peden collected information from a variety of sources including church books from 1803 to 1974, tombstone inscriptions from 1775 to 2009, burials and obituaries from The Aegis, Harford Democrat, Havre de Grace Republican and Baltimore Sun, marriage records, military records and family histories. In a series of sketches based on the old minute books of the church, the author recounts the church's early history; lists its founders, members, and pastors; and endeavors "to tell something of the families who worshiped at the Forks Church during the first half century of its existence." Several hundred families are traced by means of entries in the old minute book, family Bibles, wills, land records, tax lists, census records, and a variety of other sources, while family legends and traditions are also incorporated into the fabric of the genealogy. Today an empty white frame building rises above the north bank of Indian Creek, in Spice Valley township, Lawrence County Indiana. The church held meetings until about the 1940s but now is dissolved. The graveyard up the hill behind the little church is cared for well, and it is a quiet, peaceful place to visit and contemplate what the church once was in the life of its congregation and community. The history of this church cannot be understood apart from the history of its families. Relationships between those families illuminate and explain the migrations to Indiana in the early 1800s. The actions of individual members were shaped by actions by and toward their families. Loyalty and support within the bonds trumped almost anything else. Marriages were alliances between family-states. Perhaps you couldn't choose your family, but, before God, you stood with them. From little up, I remember driving by the little white church when visiting my Dad's family. Over a dozen people named in these pages were my direct ancestors. Counting from Jacob Waggoner Sr., I am a sixth generation Baptist.

The surviving minute book is a fraying hardbound ledger, extended with many loose sheets of paper when the pages were full. It contains the minutes from 1827 to 1882. The book itself dates from 1832 when the minutes from the old book were copied into the present volume. It is in private hands but the owner kindly permitted me to transcribe and publish it.
