Beginning with 1623, he spends the remaining 500-plus pages spinning a chronological history of Portland and the surrounding area through the mid-19th century. The author's ability to strike a good balance among the various types of history-social, political, religious and armed conflict-is one reason for the success of this volume. The discussion of numerous individuals who played a role in and influenced the development of the region, such as Governor Robert Gorges, John Winter, Arthur Macworth, Governor Shirley and Governor Andros, to name a few, is another. Conflicts with the displaced Indian peoples were prevalent and came to a head during the First Indian (or Philip's) and Second Indian Wars of the late 17th century. These wars and their effects upon the populace and further settlement have received due attention, as have the later wars such as the French and Indian Wars, the Revolutionary War, the War with Tripoli and the War of 1812. It is believed that burials were made here in the 1600s, but no records or markers survive from that period. Record keeping was equally lax in the 1700s. To bring order into the use of the cemetery, the Selectmen were authorized in 1795 to lay out the "Burial Ground into regular plats and divisions," but it was not until 1890 that a thorough and systematic survey of this large cemetery was finally done. At that time William Augustus Goodwin produced a listing of 4,136 gravestones, monuments, tombs, and grave sites, along with an accurate map showing the location of every marker. In compiling the present volume, Professor Jordan visited and checked each grave on the Goodwin map, and made additions and corrections as required. He also compared the stones with the extant burial records, and has included entries for all those persons known to have been buried here, but for whom there are no markers. In addition, several appendices list individuals whose bodies were consigned to the Portland Medical School or the Maine Medical School for teaching purposes, individuals buried in the Alms House Yard, victims of the shipwreck of the Bohemia and the 1866 Portland fire, and individuals placed in the City Tomb whose subsequent burial place was not recorded in the city burial records. In this large collection of about 7,000 records, each entry gives the person's full name, death date, and burial location. Other data, such as age, relationships, military service, race, and religion are given where known. In preparing this genealogy, Mr. Sears started with the notes of Dr. Albion K. P. Meserve (d.1904) found among the acquisitions of the Maine Historical Society. Mr. Sears supplemented this information with that found in town and county records, town and family histories, church records, pension records, tax lists, census reports, cemetery inscriptions, and Bible records.

Albert J. This alphabetical listing of hundreds of families contains information not only on Raymond but also on Casco families prior to 1841 when the two towns separated. Each family entry consists of a paragraph about the husband and wife, followed by a list of their children. Typical information includes dates and places of birth and death, name of cemetery, and sometimes the names of parents. Children are presented in birth order, with date and place of birth, death and marriage, and the names and places of origin of their spouses. Birth records were taken from a large old ledger book that was saved from a fire in which most of the other town and vital records were destroyed. Marriage dates when given were obtained either from Cumberland County marriage records or from marriage records found in the old Raymond Hall. A few marriages have been taken from old newspaper listings. The island's name was found first recorded in the Massachusetts Bay Colony proprietor's archives in 1750. The lives of the island's namesake (Joseph Frye) and the founders of Pearsontown (now Standish), Maine (Moses Pearson and Ranger Humphrey Hobbs), cross frequently, first during the capture of Louisbourg in 1745, again in the operations to expel the French Acadians from their Nova Scotia settlements in 1754, and again during the Crown Point campaign on Lake George in 1757. Frye's renowned journal of the latter was published in 1819, and inspired James Fenimore Cooper's novel, The Last of the Mohicans. During the American Revolution, Colonel Joseph Frye commanded the Maritime Defense Force at Falmouth Neck (Portland), and as a Continental Army Brigadier commanded a brigade during the British siege of Boston. He then returned to develop his land grant into the town of Fryeburg and participated in the first movement to free the area from Massachusetts to become the state of Maine. Frye Island's long list of owners since 1768 includes many renowned Maine citizens, among them the Rev. Samuel Deane, prominent diarist and city father of early Portland, and Moses Titcomb, whose descendants founded the first Maine newspaper. The book includes Indian legends and regional adventure stories, including the Tarbox family tragedy, the wild woman of Frye's Island and the bobcat attack. The appendices contain poetry about Sebago Lake, the White Mountains and Songo River by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, John Greenleaf Whittier and other local authors. Dr. Joseph Earnhardt's delightful musings about his life on the island are contained in a separate appendix. The book is richly illustrated with maps and drawings; illustrations by Christa H. However, the area was the subject of several conflicting grants, and little permanent settlement took place until the Pejepscot Company was formed in 1714. The towns of Brunswick and Topsham, Maine were constituted townships by the General Court in 1717, but were not incorporated until much later. Harpswell was originally part of North Yarmouth, had been appended to Brunswick for a short time, and was finally incorporated as a separate town in 1758. This huge history covers the entire area developed by the Pejepscot Proprietors from the time of the aboriginal inhabitants down to the late nineteenth century. All the usual historical topics are covered, including such fascinating items as criminals and the courts, taverns and public halls, modes of travel and means of communication, schools, churches, forts and garrison, and commercial, municipal, and military history of the towns. In addition, there are about three hundred pages devoted to biographies, family histories, and various civil and military lists. There are numerous illustrations and maps as well.
