The documents in this volume fall within a period of great interest and importance to students of Maine history, and have been selected to largely embrace Indian affairs and questions of ownership of lands, which agitated those who were struggling to establish themselves along the outposts of civilization. Covering the years 1692–1729, these documents consist mainly of letters between leading citizens and public officials, addressing matters of important historical interest. Eminent names include Sir William Phipps, John Wheelwright, Gov. Shute, Lt. Gov. Dummer, Col. T. Westbrook, Capt. John Penhallow, John Schuyler, Gov. Wm. Burnet, Lt. Gov. Wentworth, J. Wainwright, Col. Wm. Pepperell, Gov. Armstrong and many others. Treaties with Indians, witchcraft trials, French and Indian attacks, Jesuit influence upon the Indians, fisheries and fur trade, construction of fortifications, property descriptions and owners, provisions and supplies, new settlements, military expeditions, and illnesses are just a few of the topics treated in these documents. Documents are chronologically arranged, allowing the reader to follow events in an orderly manner, and augmented by an index of full-names, important events, topics and places.
