St. Thomas has four cemeteries: the old cemetery (also known as the Church Yard Cemetery), which was enclosed by a stone wall in 1822; the "colored cemetery" which is located just outside the walls of the old cemetery; a new cemetery (also known as Cemetery), which was laid out in 1926; and the Rosewood cemetery which is contiguous to the new cemetery. Not all individuals recorded here were buried in St. Thomas' four cemeteries. Some burial services were conducted by St. Thomas ministers at family plots, those locations are given if noted. Original sources were also used to supplement information in the card file. This is a 267 year record of families. The reader who is willing to spend time perusing this data will find a record of family lives and survival, of early deaths of both newborn and mothers, or diseases striking down fathers, mothers and children at an early age. You must look behind the dates. There are few records in the state before 1850 despite the phenomenal growth of Methodist churches in Maryland during this period. By that decision, a quiet, rural community was catapulted into the throes of major change. In 1980, the Owings Mills Historical Council was formed, its purpose being to collect, preserve, and disseminate information about the town's history. Part of that effort took the form of an oral history project in which fifty interviews with the town's older residents were recorded. Marie Forbes, an active participant in the Council's activities, and a well-published freelance writer, was inspired to take those recordings and transform them into a written history of the town which would combine and distill the collective memories of the community. This book is the result. Part I of this book deals with the early history of the community. Since no living representatives of those early times were available to interview, Ms. Forbes has reconstructed, based on her extensive historical research, lively and exciting narratives featuring a series of historical figures which form a series of "Voices Past." Part II, "Voices Present," contains verbatim extracts taken from the History Council's taped interviews conducted between 1980 and 1988. The extracts have been arranged in an interesting manner by topical headings, and have been supplemented with brief annotations by Ms. Forbes. Most of the narrators were long-time residents of Owings Mills, and all had a strong connection with the current or past life of the community. As Ms. Forbes has noted, "As the various voices contribute their remembrances of how we ran our homes and businesses, what we did for fun, how we cared for the sick, who among our citizens was unusual or unique, and a wealth of other topics, we obtain not just a narrowly focused view of life in the Owings Mills community, but a widely-angled perspective." The text has been attractively illustrated with many old-time photographs.

Marie Forbes

(1988, 2004), 2013, 5.5" x 8.5", paper, 404 pp.

ISBN: 9781556131424

101-F0142

Tracing the descent of specific tracts of land has often revealed family relationships or clues to possible relationships that may not be apparent from other sources. Settlers who applied for land grants had to pay fees at every step of the process as they obtained surveys, patents and titles. Business was generally confined to Maryland, Virginia, and Washington, D.C., insuring members of the public in these states, including such notables as Roger Brook Taney and William Henry Harrison. In addition, the company possessed a virtual monopoly on slave life insurance until the end of the 1840's. By the eve of the Civil War, approximately half the policies sold were on slave risks. Baltimore Life made every effort not to differentiate between northern and southern war risks, but the physical and economic devastation of the war placed the company in an extremely precarious position. The author identifies the original settlers of the Seventh Election District area and follows their descendants for three generations. Many of the first pioneers were of English descent, born in the Tenth District, which lies just south of the Seventh District, and had family members still living in that area. Succeeding generations became increasingly interrelated through marriage, due to limited transportation and the lack of contact with outside influences. These relationships explain how the many properties were divided and passed from one generation to the next. There will be some extension into neighboring areas as the concentric rings of family always extend outward. The Weisburg Inn, early history and political subdivisions, early families along the Chesapeake Bay, early road, communities, and more are briefly examined. There are few records in the state before 1850 despite the phenomenal growth of Methodist churches in Maryland during this period.
