In any event, it is a detailed history of its early times with about half the volume devoted to the seventeenth century. This town was first settled in 1640, and for seventy years was on the frontier, and subject to repeated Indian depredations which are discussed extensively. Many early settlers are named, and can be readily found with the new full-name index added to this reprint. An appendix provides a list of ministers, college graduates, and representatives to the legislature. There is also a directory listing the "Professional Gentlemen," merchants, manufacturers, mechanics, etc., which makes interesting reading. Not many women are listed, but we find Nancy Williams was a "mantuamaker" on Water Street. There is also a list of local societies with their officers. Motes examines two subjects; the place of birth of all residents born outside of Massachusetts (to demonstrate migration patterns) and the occupations of all of its residents (to demonstrate diversity of skills). The 1850 Federal Census data for occupations lists over two thousand people in the work force, but not surprisingly, few opportunities for women. Margaret P. Motes stated that upon examining the 1850 Newburyport City Directory, women were indeed listed with many varying occupations, though they were not recorded by the census taker. The largest number of immigrants came from Ireland but many came from England and Scotland as well, bringing with them skills and occupations like weaver, carpenter, shoemaker and mariner. More attention is given to the earlier decades rather than the later, and the life of this small community is set within the history of the larger context of the times. Englishmen first settled around Jeffreys' Creek in 1640 and petitioned for the establishment of their own town in 1645. After first describing the area prior to 1645, the author then launches into the history of the town. He covers such national events as the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War as well as more local happenings such as the fishery and cabinet-making businesses, schools and churches, and the use of the town as a summer-time resort. Appendices provide a more focused look at various aspects of the town's history. For instance, a typical Sunday's activities are described, historical sketches of the cemeteries and some inscriptions are included, military rosters cover the major wars listed above, police regulations provide a look at the legal side of the town's operation, and the town officials are listed for 1645 through 1895. Its publication coincides with the tercentenary observance of the events that form one of the grimmest chapters in colonial American history. The book has three parts. Part One, "Salem Witchcraft History," provides background information on the Puritan settlement of New England and documents the circumstances which led to the witch hunt of 1692. It identifies the conspirators who accused innocent people by working in collusion with the Puritan old guard authority. It then gives an account of the Andover phase of the witch hunt, with emphasis on the almost forgotten story of the fifty townspeople who were imprisoned for witchcraft in 1692.

Nathaniel Hawthorne was a descendant of John Hathorne, one of the most zealous of the Salem witch hunters. This history begins in 1634 with the first settlement of the area and continues through 1819 when the town of Essex was incorporated and received its current name. The history for the years from 1820 to 1868 is treated in the form of a chronology of events rather than as a narrative, and highlights a variety of aspects of the town including businesses, the post office, the poorhouse and farm, temperance reformation, church building, ship building, and population statistics, among others. The town's involvement in the Civil War is given brief coverage but much attention is given to the participating soldiers; biographical sketches are generally a lengthy paragraph and include vital statistics, military service, occupation, bouts with disease, and quotes from the individuals, when available. Appendices include marriages (1790-1827) and deaths (1790-1832), rosters of college graduates (1689-1867) and professional men (1761-1866), and rosters of various officials at the town and state level (1780-1867).
