CD: The History of Massachusetts From the First Settlement Thereof in 1628 - Thomas Hutchinson, Esq. Thomas Hutchinson, late governor of Massachusetts, endeavored in these two volumes to preserve the history of the Massachusetts Colony. The repeated destruction of ancient records and papers by fire in the town of Boston spurred him forward in his efforts. Many of his resources came from his ancestors, who for four successive generations had been principal actors in public affairs, a manuscript history by Mr. William Hubbard and the library of Reverend Mr. Mather. In Volume One, Chapter One covers the history of the colony from the first settlement to 1660; Chapter Two-from the restoration of King Charles II to 1686; Chapter Three-from the dissolution of the Charter in 1686 until the arrival of the Province Charter in 1692; Chapter Four-the Ecclesiastical Constitution and the special religious customs; Chapter Five-the system of laws established in the Colony; Chapter Six-the original state of the country with respect to the inhabitants and soil; plus an appendix. In Volume Two, Chapter One covers from the Charter in 1691 until the arrival of Governor Dudley in 1702; Chapter Two-from the arrival of Governor Dudley in 1702 to the arrival of Governor Shute in 1716; Chapter Three-from the arrival of Governor Shute in 1716 to the arrival of Governor Belcher in 1730; Chapter Four-from the arrival of Governor Belcher in 1730 to the reimbursement of the charge of the expedition against Cape Breton and the abolition of paper money in 1749, plus an appendix. New indices incorporate the originals and provide a reference to subject matter, places and names. The book is presented as graphic images, so the user sees the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a "real" book. There is no electronic index, and there is no electronic text to search. However, numerous electronic bookmarks have been added which make it easy to move through the book. Image numbers will match the page numbers for all of the main text, as well as the index. Any unnumbered portraits and illustrations are at the back of the actual file, to keep page numbering consistent.
