The Black Watch was also known as the 42nd Regiment of Foot, the Highlanders, the Royal Highlanders or Lord John Murray's Highlanders. Included in this work is a family history of the Campbells of Inverawe. Appendices A-S give a wide variety of information: regimental and company rolls; principal campaigns, battles, etc.; British and Provincial Regiments at Ticonderoga, 1758 and 1759; and biographical sketches of thirty-one officers of 1758 (including Abercrombie, several Campbells, John Reid, James and Lord John Murray, and Thomas Stirling). Other appendices contain an original regimental list of the Black Watch; 1759 officers list; and references taken from Commissary Wilson's Orderly Book. Both men commanded provincial units; Washington led Virginians and Mercer, Pennsylvanians. Unlike Washington, however, Mercer was not a native of the American colonies. He fled to Pennsylvania from Scotland in 1746 after the Battle of Culloden (part of an unsuccessful Scottish uprising against King George II). Mercer, who had studied medicine in Scotland, settled in the Pennsylvania frontier to avoid possible arrest for his participation at Culloden. When the French and Indian War erupted nearly a decade later, Mercer's neighbors tapped him to command a company of militia. Mercer quickly rose in the ranks and eventually commanded a battalion of Pennsylvania provincial soldiers as well as the garrison at Fort Pitt (captured Fort Duquesne). After seven years of military service, Mercer was discharged from the Pennsylvania Regiment in 1761 and settled in Fredericksburg, Virginia. He married, raised a family, and established a very successful medical practice. When the decade-long political dispute with Great Britain turned violent in 1775, Virginia's political leaders considered Hugh Mercer for command of one of Virginia's two regiments of regular troops. After two close ballots, the Virginia Convention opted instead to appoint Virginia natives Patrick Henry and William Woodford to command. Mercer was selected a few months later to command the 3rd Virginia Regiment, but six months after his appointment, the Continental Congress elevated him to the rank of Brigadier General in the Continental Army and he left Virginia to assume command of the newly formed Flying Camp in New Jersey. While he served in the northern theatre, Mercer played a critical role in the battles of Trenton and Princeton, two battles that helped save the American army and American independence. Sadly, General Mercer did not live to see the victorious end to America's struggle; he was mortally wounded at the Battle of Princeton in 1777. Congress honored Mercer with a statue that still stands in Fredericksburg and several townships and counties have honored his memory by taking his name.

This book seeks to chronicle Mercer's life and service and in doing so validate the observation of Major James Wilkinson, a veteran of the Revolutionary War, who wrote that: "In General Mercer we lost a chief, who for education, experience, talents, disposition, integrity and patriotism, was second to no man but the commander in chief, and was qualified to fill the highest trusts of the country." An appendix with a transcript of Mercer's Last Will and Testament, maps, a bibliography, and, an index to full-names, places and subjects add to the value of this work.

Michael Cecere

2015, 5.5" x 8.5", paper, index, 200 pp.

ISBN: 9780788456220

101-C5622

Rolls and Lists of Connecticut soldiers who served in colonial wars:

Roll and Lists of Connecticut in the Revolution - Connecticut Historical Society (1901). The first volume covers the years 1731 to 1750, and the topics include Shirley's early political appointments, the building of forts on the frontier, raising of troops, defense of Nova Scotia, prisoner exchanges, movements of the French, the expedition against Louisbourg, plans for an expedition against Crown Point, and more. Much of the correspondence during this period is between Shirley and Benning Wentworth, William Pepperrell, the Duke of Newcastle, and George Clinton. The correspondence in the second volume, 1750-1761, is especially fascinating. Most of these letters were written in 1755-1756, the critical early years of the final French and Indian War, while Shirley was Military Commander of America. These papers deal with Indian conferences, the need for the colonies to unite, the Crown Point and Niagara expeditions, Braddock's expedition and defeat, the Battle of Lake George, fortification of Lake George and attack upon Ticonderoga, garrisons for the Indians and provisions for independent companies, troops at Forts William Henry and Edward, enlistment of indented servants, the strained relationship between Shirley and Loudoun, and more. They never expected the punishing defeat they were about to suffer at the hands of the capable and underrated French partisan leader, Langis (Langy). This original work tells the story of the Battle on Snowshoes from a new perspective. The author, an experienced Adirondack hunting guide and a French partisan re-enactor, based this book on field experience as well as book research. Bob Bearor trekked over the sites in period clothing and equipment, made countless camps throughout the hills (even in minus-20-degree weather), searched out travel routes, and endeavored to substantiate the times and conditions described in participants' journal entries. He even relived the day of the battle exactly as recorded in Rogers' own journal. In this way, he has been able to separate fact from fiction as accurately as possible. Bearor writes knowledgeably about the weather and geographical conditions, the forts, and the eighteenth-century soldiers' weapons, equipment and provisions. Habitually without funds, supplies, experienced military leadership, or even a motivated body of men willing to defend their homes, the Virginia Colony struggled desperately to protect its western frontier from Indian incursions and partisan raids meant to wipe out the English presence in the Ohio River and Allegheny Mountain regions and secure a French monopoly on Indian trade.

Professor Hayes Baker-Crothers examines the role of the Virginia Colony at the outbreak of war and analyzes Virginia's contributions to the hard-won English victory, hampered for years by the legislative incompetence, military inactivity, and self-interest inherent in the British Colonial system. Following the initial publication of that work, Ms. Baker and Emma Lewis Coleman continued to research this topic, scouring the libraries and archives of New England and Canada for information. Following the death of Ms. Baker, Ms. Coleman prepared the present volumes using all the data they had accumulated over several decades. These volumes name all the captives they discovered and provide biographical data on each, but the sketches on those people who had been covered in the earlier volume are abbreviated in comparison to those who had not been covered in the first compilation. This highly desirable reprint includes not just one, but many such accounts. Between 1750 and 1753, Christopher Gist, the Agent of the Ohio Company of Virginia, explored the greater portion of the region now included within the states of Ohio, Kentucky and West Virginia, and parts of western Maryland and southwestern Pennsylvania. These explorations were the earliest made so far west for the single object of examining the country, and they are the first of which a regular journal was kept. Gist is often remembered for saving George Washington from freezing to death in the Allegheny River as they returned from delivering a message to the commandant of the French forts in the Ohio country during the winter of 1753. These remarkable journals contain descriptions of lands, friendly and hostile Indians, Indian customs, French settlements and forts, English settlements, and interesting events that occurred on the trail. Additionally, this book contains biographical sketches of Gist and many interpreters and traders, such as Andrew Montour and the Montour family, George Croghan, Thomas Cresap, the Indian Guyasuta, General James Grant, Conrad Weiser, and others. Historical documents, correspondence, and maps supplement this important work. Of special interest is Robert Orme's letter to Gov. Dinwiddie, describing the horror of Braddock's Defeat. Other information relates to the Treaty of Lancaster, the Ohio Company, the Walpole Grant, Wm. Trent and Company, Pownall's Account of the Lead Plate, and Letters and Speeches to Indians. Recruited in France by the Ministry of the Marine, these men were organized into independent companies-Les Compagnies Franches de la Marine-and assigned to posts throughout the French colonial empire. The marine in Canada was the only regular soldier in the colony from 1685 to 1755. His assignment to Canada was for life. After his term of service, he was expected to become a colonist. Unlike other European soldiers, the marine became part of the country in which he served. In many cases, he became as Canadian as those native born. Topics include: history, material culture, a marine's life, marine music, cannoneers-bombardiers, watercraft, and French fortifications in Canada, along with several appendices that cover such items as: the organization of a marine company in Canada, marine pay, a list of marine officers, caliber of French artillery and small arms, and Native Americans allied with the French. This book examines a military force that has been condemned or virtually ignored by historians, suggesting instead that these soldiers were an effective military force and important to the development of North America. In a war marked by early failures in tactics and strategy, the British Army would have to adapt to their surroundings in many ways to achieve victory. Not the least of which was in uniforms and equipment. From the simple act of lightening the baggage the average soldier carried, to changing the very weapons he fought with, this war would see much change to the Redcoat in North America. This book details these changes by examining the journals, accounts, and artwork of those who were actually there, as well as the official British Army records. A great deal of time and detail is spent discussing the nuts and bolts of the soldiers' uniforms and equipment and the system that supplied them. Field alterations and official modifications are also included. The vivid descriptions are given life in over a dozen illustrations and diagrams, making this an extremely comprehensive study of an army in transition. As such, the text is infused with all the anxiety and emotion of a nation at war and allows the reader a unique perspective on a seminal event in the course of American history. After three years of attempts to remove the French from their settlements and forts on English territory, the British resolved to replace their inept, politically appointed commanders with reputable generals. The new strategy proposed and adopted was to combine the British regulars, provincial forces and militias into three expeditions to attack the French on three fronts simultaneously, and to take all of Canada, ridding North America of all French interests. One by one, the French forts fell: DuQuesne, Frontenac, Louisbourg, Ticonderoga and Crown Point. This volume takes the reader up to the eve of Wolfe's invasion of Quebec City. These pages contain the exact articles presented to the reader as originally published; there are facts, rumors, exaggerations, unconfirmed reports and several downright falsehoods. These unaltered newspaper articles consist of letters, reports and perhaps a few exaggerations; still, they represent the type of information that was flowing from the printing presses to the general public. The battle for Quebec on the Plains of Abraham occurred on September 13, 1759, but news traveled slowly and the citizens in Boston waited in suspense until mid-October for confirmation of that British victory. The newspapers continued to feature eyewitness accounts of the battle for months, praising the brave actions of the fighting men and lamenting the deaths of the great rival generals, Wolfe and Montcalm. Another well-known event took place that same September when Robert Rogers and his famous Rangers attacked and demolished the St. Francis Indian village. Although the goal of the expedition was accomplished, French militia, in hot pursuit of the Rangers, forced Rogers to alter his return route. He and his men nearly starved to death during that exhausting journey. While the British were claiming victories in the north, newspapers in Virginia and the Carolinas reported that the Creek and Cherokee Indians were spreading mayhem in the southern colonies. After enduring repeated attempts to assault, burn and bomb Montreal, Governor Vaudreuil agreed to surrender the city, and General Amherst was hailed as the "Conqueror of Canada." The Articles of Capitulation, September 8, 1760, are presented here in their entirety. Blockaded by the powerful British Navy, the people of New France might have been lacking in provisions, but certainly not in fighting spirit. Attempts to retake Montreal and Louisbourg stretched the resources of the British forces, who also were fending off the Creeks and the Cherokees on the western frontier. As if that weren't enough, the best troops and generals in British service were sent to the West Indies, participating in fierce battles for control of Martinique and Cuba. Although the Treaty of Paris did not officially end the French and Indian War until 1763, the exciting events of the years 1761 and 1762 covered here are often glossed over in traditional history books. In 1763, the corps was revived to take part in Pontiac's Rebellion. During the American Revolution, Rogers fought on the British side and commanded Rogers' Queen's and King's Rangers. Tragically, this extraordinary leader died in disgrace a few years after the Revolution in a London debtors' prison. In North America, the complexity of this war was magnified by the clashing cultures swept up in it: European, colonial, and Native American. Prior to the publication of this encyclopedia, researching this war was a cumbersome chore of assembling and interpreting a motley group of sources. This task could involve costly travels to colonial records repositories, or time-consuming requests for British military records and translations from French-Canadian archives. In this convenient reference work, the researcher will find a distillation of information from many sources. The entries provide richly detailed biographies of British and French officers and men, noteworthy colonists, and prominent Native Americans. Other entries include regimental histories, important battles, locations, forts, military terminology, Native tribes, and political and social issues. An avid collector of books on early American history for more than forty years (and dealer for more than twenty years), Don Stoetzel acquired over 2,500 books on the French and Indian War alone. Although Braddock was killed not far from his goal in the grisly clash known today as Braddock's Defeat, the route that he opened ultimately became a highway for western emigration, and part of it was incorporated in the National Road. A portrait of Lord Dunmore in his tartans, an old woodcut depicting the Battle of Point Pleasant, and 2 new maps enhance the text.

Warren Skidmore with Donna Kaminsky

(2002), 2022, paper, index, 304 pp.

ISBN: 9780788423987

101-S2396

Volume 11 in the Chronicles of Canada series, this book is essentially a biography of James Wolfe, the great general who led the British to victory at Fortress Louisbourg in Nova Scotia and Quebec, but succumbed to wounds received in the same battle that killed his noted adversary, Montcalm, on the Plains of Abraham. Beginning with Wolfe's family history, this work follows the sickly boy's growth and development into a dedicated soldier, influenced by his father and other military leaders, and shaped by experience. This work contains famous portraits of Wolfe, Pitt and Amherst, the great British commanders of the French and Indian War. The earliest surveys of land in Kentucky taken from the 1917 Yearbook of the Society of Colonial Wars in Kentucky were military surveys made in Fincastle County which in 1773 comprised all of the state of Kentucky, Fayette, Jefferson, and Lincoln Counties. Information contained in these surveys are the name of the person drawing the land; rank; acres surveyed; location of land often giving water courses and adjacent neighbors. These surveys began in 1774 and continued through 1789 and contained the names of approximately 1,000 persons. Around the middle of the 18th century, the British government began to dispatch Highland Regiments, such as Fraser's Highlanders, the Black Watch, and Montgomery's Highlanders, to America. The French and Indain War of 1756-1763, in particular, led to significant recruitment in Scotland for service in the American colonies. The experience gained by these soldiers was to influence their decision to emigrate subsequently to America. In this regard, the allocation of land to former military personnel in the aftermath of that war was a major incentive. Not surprisingly, the massive increase in emigration to America from the Scottish Highlands that occurred in the decade of the French and Indian War resulted to some extent from the influence of returning soldiers. Scottish soldiers and former soldiers fought on both sides of the American Revolution, and following that conflict, a number of Scottish Loyalists settled in what were to become Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, New Brunswick, Ontario, and Quebec.

For this book, Scottish emigration authority David Dobson identified over a thousand Scottish solders in colonial America. The list of soldiers is arranged alphabetically and, while the descriptions vary widely, the researcher will discover some or all of the following information in each one: soldier's name, rank, military unit, date(s) and campaign(s) of service, place of birth, when arrived in North America, civilian occupation, date and place of death, and the source of the information. Because the Highlanders found here offer potential links between the New and Old Worlds, this ground-breaking book will be welcomed by all students of Scottish genealogy.

David Dobson

(1995, 1997), 2002, paper, 63 pp.

ISBN: 9780806347189

102-9216
