Part I is a discussion of the origins of the Brigade, its organization, the process of recruitment, the regimental officers and company commanders. This section includes a listing of the actions in which each of the regiments participated. Part II contains facsimiles of letters of soldiers who served in the Potomac Home Brigade, with exact transcriptions on the facing pages. The original handwriting can be read by the ambitious decipherer, or one can refer to the corresponding translation. This is the first time these letters have been published. Part III enhances the letters by offering additional collateral letters, documents, diary entries and contemporary newspaper articles found in various archives and collections. Many of these are also being published for the first time. Part IV is a series of biographical sketches of those writers of the letters in the author's collection on whom information is available. Also included are sketches of the principal persons mentioned. Photographs and inventories of some of the soldiers' personal effects add interest to this section. Part V is a comprehensive listing of each person who initially volunteered to serve in the Potomac Home Brigade. They are listed alphabetically by regiment and company. Each person's rank and date of mustering in is also listed. Those interested in determining if an ancestor was one who "answered the call" will find this section a valuable aid in their genealogical research. In the Afterword the author discusses significant lessons to be learned by the perusal of these documents. He also relates some very interesting stories of his journeys in Maryland, Pennsylvania and Washington, D.C. in search of materials for his research. Numerous historical works have been published in which the major battles in Maryland are remembered and studied, but the same may not be said of Maryland's people. Maryland contributed men to both sides of the war, but produced no Lee or Stuart, no Grant, Sherman or Sheridan. With the exception of Harriet Tubman and Raphael Semmes, those Marylanders who achieved notoriety in their lifetimes are largely forgotten. Ask the average person if they know of John Reese Kenly, Bradley T. Johnson, Harry Gilmore, the men of the 1st Maryland Infantry (U.S.), the Maryland Cavalry (C.S.A.), or the 7th United States Colored Troops and few will respond. Still, if not well remembered, the Maryland men and women of the Civil War are not lost. Their lives are preserved in published works; or, resting in archives and libraries. This book will help you find them. The author's passion for his subject shines through in his fascinating "Introduction: A Historiography of Maryland in the Civil War," which precedes the listings. Sothoron from 1807 to 1893, with emphasis on the Civil War era. The book begins with the War of 1812 using reports made to the federal government for claims of damages, census reports and many other sources. The role of slavery is examined and the author shows how fragmentary records of human bondage can be evaluated to establish specific conclusions. The Civil War era in Maryland was characterized by extreme political and military turbulence and a Union army troop shortage beginning in June of 1862. This book presents a thorough research analysis of how those forces directly affected the Sothoron family and St. Mary's County, Maryland, where they lived. The partisan politics, laws, policies and actions of the Union government are included to give the reader insight into how the entire Sothoron family, including infants, was the unwilling victim of harsh and draconian policies designed to oppress freedom. In the summer of 1776, the rage militaire has captured the imagination of the citizens of the newly declared United States of America, who are convinced that one decisive battle will win their independence. This battle takes place on Long Island and is a disaster for the Continental Army, which barely escapes utter destruction. Fortunately it does not prove to be the definitive battle of the revolution. It is, however, the beginning of a nightmare of shameful defeats and panicked retreats for the American army, as it tries desperately to survive this campaign in order to resurrect itself for another, more hopeful campaign. All depends on a little band of amateur soldiers who must sacrifice themselves for a country now unsure of its reason for being.

This is just the beginning of the further adventures of Christopher Sims, as he fights for his country and his life alongside his comrades as a member of Smallwood's legendary Marylanders. Made prisoner at the Battle of Princeton and incarcerated in one of the hellish prison ships known as the "Hulks," Christopher's only hope to live is a desperate escape attempt. Even as Christopher struggles to survive, his love, Hannah Williams, has, herself, been made prisoner by Loyalist pirates terrorizing the Chesapeake Bay. The search for Hannah will involve her friends in a little known war within a war fought between Maryland patriots and British loyalists among the confusion of islands and hidden inlets of the Chesapeake Bay.

John C. A wealth of vintage photographs and a bibliography enhance the text. The officers and men who served in these sister services played an important role in the War Between the States. Maryland and Virginia officers serving in the United States Navy and Marine Corps, and the midshipmen attending the United States Naval Academy, resigned almost in mass and volunteered in their Confederate counterparts. Without a doubt the Confederacy received many of the brightest and best officers in the United States service. Marylander commanded the Signal Corps, and his staff was from both states. Most of the officers and men who served in the First and Second Companies, Independent Signal Corps, were from Virginia. The Secret Service fell under nominal command of Colonel Norris of the Signal Corps. However, the operatives were not regularly enrolled or paid, and they are, therefore, difficult to identify. Some were paid directly by the Confederate Treasury Department. The records of their service are sketchy, but some postwar accounts do exist. These pages also preserve an authentic picture of the Southern sentiment in Maryland, along with the medical procedures and treatments of the time. Illustrated. The object of this work is to establish a record of the exciting careers of those physicians who joined the Confederacy. These Maryland patriots served in the army, navy, and marines to preserve the freedom and independence handed down by their fathers' fathers. Two hundred and eight doctors are included in these biographies - one was surgeon-general of Virginia, one became surgeon-general of Florida, and another surgeon-general of North Carolina, while sixty-five gained the rank of surgeon. Few of these men had previous military experience and were not prepared for the incessant life and death struggle of combat casualties. Many of these heroic doctors were wounded while attending their brothers-in-arms on the battlefield; some were killed in action. These pages also preserve an authentic picture of the Southern sentiment in Maryland, along with the medical procedures and treatments of the time. Due to the scarcity of documentary material, these sketches are written at a cavalry gallop, and no distinction has been made between Maryland's native sons and her adopted ones. Both units suffered extensive losses (killed, wounded and captured) and both units were, as their names imply, made up mainly of men from Maryland. This is their story, presented in the words of the members of the units whenever possible. Material was often gleaned from unpublished manuscripts. The first leader of the First Maryland Artillery, Richard Snowden Andrews, was wounded so severely at the Battle of Cedar Run that no one expected him to live. But he did, with a twelve-inch-square silver plate in his abdomen. The First Maryland Artillery was part of the force that blocked the retreat of Union forces near the end of the Second Battle of Winchester on June 15, 1863. Thirteen of the sixteen men manning the two cannon blocking the Union forces were killed or wounded during the engagement, which was fought at nearly point-blank range. The Second Maryland, or Baltimore Light, Artillery was often "borrowed" by cavalry units to support their actions. The Second Maryland Artillery took heavy losses in men, horses and equipment in the Battles of Yellow Tavern (May 11, 1864) and Woodstock (October 9, 1864). In both cases the unit was overrun by Union forces. In fact, General J. E. B. A commission consisting of General L. Allison Wilmer, Adjutant-General of Maryland; Dr. James H. Jarrett, late surgeon 7th Regiment Infantry, Maryland Volunteers; and Colonel George W. F. [Confederate States Army]

The First Maryland Infantry was formed from Marylanders who chose to cast their lot with the Confederacy against a Union government that had invaded their state and established martial law, forcing those who disagreed with the invasion of the South to join the Confederates or to submit to what they considered as tyranny. Organized at Harpers Ferry, they fought in the first battle of the war at Bull Run, and distinguished themselves for their valor. The Marylanders fought in the Shenandoah Valley under Jackson, bringing new honors to their fame. During the Seven Day Campaign they made an outstanding charge across open fields to help break the Union lines at Gaines's Mill. Disbanded in 1862, they quickly reorganized and gathered new recruits to become the Second Maryland Infantry. These gallant Marylanders defended the Shenandoah Valley during the winter of 1862-63, and then fought in the battle of Winchester in 1863. Joining Lee's Army of Northern Virginia, they charged up Culp's Hill on July 2-3, losing half their number. In June 1864, the Marylanders charged without orders and closed a gap in the Confederate lines at Cold Harbor. Defending Petersburg, they were in several counterattacks to recover the Weldon Railroad. During the winter of 1864-65 the Marylanders were constantly called on for picket duty, while others around them deserted. They fought to the last at Petersburg in April 1865, and the survivors surrendered at Appomattox Court House on April 9, 1865.

Robert J.
