The information was transcribed from the Adjutant General's officer roster, volumes one and two. Since it was the responsibility of the Secretary of State to maintain the roster prior to 1820, it was imperfectly kept and it is likely that it no longer survives. After 1820, the duty was transferred to the state's Adjutant Generals, where it was accurately maintained as long as the state's militia law remained in effect. Entries in the list include the name, rank, dates of commission and discharge (when given), and the unit of each officer. A large number of the entries also include the place of residence of the officer. In addition to the database, two documents that will aid the researcher in narrowing down the identity of the subject in question are included. The first is a breakdown by the villages, towns, or cities that made up each regiment, brigade and division. Since state law required each officer to reside within the boundaries of his militia unit, it is possible to distinguish militia officers with the same name by knowing their residence. A biographical sketch of Joseph Frye, early settlers with details of their lots, early life and customs, first proprietors, ecclesiastical development, Parson Fessenden, early town government, schools, the Fryeburg Academy, the Saco River, and other geographical assets are covered. Part I discusses the salient features of the Piscataqua environment, the earliest settlements between the Merrimack and Piscataqua Rivers and the difficulties faced by the first settlers as they adjusted to the realities of frontier life. Part II is concerned with the colonists' early problems and achievements as they sought to fulfill the promise of the land and its resources. It analyzes the methods of land distribution and timber utilization among the towns, the dangers posed by the Masonian proprietary controversy and the French and Indian wars, and the impact of the Massachusetts-New Hampshire boundary dispute and of land speculation upon land usage. Part III details developments in trade and commerce, particularly the extensive economic expansion that occurred during the early eighteenth century. It discusses the settlers' responses to the internal threats of capital scarcity, labor shortages, an inadequate medium of exchange, inflation and indebtedness, and to the external threats posed by wars, the Navigation Acts, English mercantile competition and economic competition from Massachusetts merchants. Part IV analyzes the transformation of the four Piscataqua villages into a relatively mature provincial society. Preoccupied with a search for social order and stability, the settlers at first used the church, the family, the town meeting and the law within the context of an intimate community setting (the town) to perpetuate cherished values. But by the 1690s the towns as units of social organization were no longer able to resolve effectively the divisive problems and conflicting values among their inhabitants. Consequently, during the early eighteenth century the provincial government supplanted the town as the more important sociopolitical institution, and its leaders developed a more complex system of values capable of solving the problems disrupting New Hampshire's expanding society. Beginning with 1623, he spends the remaining 500-plus pages spinning a chronological history of Portland and the surrounding area through the mid-19th century. The author's ability to strike a good balance among the various types of history-social, political, religious and armed conflict-is one reason for the success of this volume. While Fairfield is the specific scope, the practical scope is much broader, as such an early town history can never be completely separated from the history of the colony as a whole. Fairfield's accessible location upon Long Island Sound brought about its early discovery and initial settlement in 1639. From this first settlement through the second decade of the nineteenth century, Mrs. Schenk covers every aspect of a town history. A few general topics which are addressed are wars, agriculture, relations with the Indians, churches, schools, government and growth. The wealth of detailed history and available knowledge provided in over 700 pages of text is not all that these volumes have to offer. There are over twenty-five appendices containing such information as lists of freemen, land divisions (including the names of recipients), and deeds (with signatures intact). The parish record of Christ's Church is yet another source of names as it contains a \"record of those that renewed the covenant,\" records of baptisms and lists of marriages. Yet to be mentioned, but of no less significance, is a collection of nearly 100 genealogical sketches and an every-name plus subject index. It is hard to imagine that a more comprehensive history of Fairfield's first two hundred years could be written. There are few reports of vital records. The majority of those reported were deaths with next of kin noted in most cases. The elder man had had a grand vision of developing the timber and mineral resources of the tract (210,000 acres, or over 320 square miles), but had been repeatedly thwarted by climatic and environmental obstacles. Even though his personal efforts died with him in 1803, his heirs attempted for decades afterwards to carry out his vision. Descriptions of floods, summer frosts and other difficulties in the diaries demonstrate that even after the removal of the British and Indian threats following the War of 1812, most efforts to transform the Adirondack forests to agricultural and commercial pursuits (such as the iron manufacturing described in the diaries) were doomed to failure. John Brown Francis was in his twenties when he wrote these accounts in 1816, 1817 and 1818. \"[F]rom tavern keepers and toll collectors to farmers' daughters and land barons, little of the human condition escapes the eye of the youthful annalist. Within its volumes researchers will find some of the most valuable genealogical compilations and source record transcriptions to be found anywhere. It is difficult, one might even say foolhardy, to attempt to do research on New England families without reference to this important series. However, copies of the original editions of these volumes are becoming increasingly difficult to find, so Heritage Books has reprinted the early volumes of this important serial in order to make them more accessible to the rank and file genealogist. Each volume has an index, and in addition, a comprehensive index to the first fifty volumes is also available. In the description below it is only possible to touch on some of the main articles—each volume also contains much additional material.Genealogies: Elwell; Noyes; Yale; Hoar; March; Adams; Axtell; Parmelee; Gaylord; Barker; Fowler; Stone; White. Biographical sketches: Hon. William A. Richardson; Henry Thayer Drowne; Hon. John Cummings; Capt. Edmond Blood; John Fuller of Ipswich, Massachusetts.; President Edwards; Dr. John F.
