This publication contains the records of apprenticeships scattered among the minutes of the county courts for Eastern Tennessee. The records, some 11,000 of them, span the period from 1778 to 1911 and bear reference to apprenticeships created in the following Tennessee counties: Anderson, Bledsoe, Blount, Bradley, Campbell, Carter, Claiborne, Grainger, Greene, Hamblen, Hawkins, Jefferson, Johnson, Knox, Loudon, Marion, McMinn, Meigs, Monroe, Morgan, Polk, Rhea, Roane, Scott, Sequatchie, Sevier, Sullivan, Union, and Washington. Where noted in the records, these apprentices were groomed to work in the following trades: hatter, blacksmith, saddler, tanner, farmer, tinsmith, weaver, shoemaker, seamstress, mill wright, and carpenter.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eThe information in the book was compiled from county court minutes on microfilm obtained, in almost every case, from the Tennessee State Archives. Mr. Miller has arranged the records by county and thereunder chronologically. Jonathan Austin's father served with General George Washington in the Revolutionary War and had at least one son, Elijah F. Austin. Elijah was born in Powell Valley in the part that is now in Claiborne County, Tennessee in 1818. He moved to Sequatchie Valley sometime between 1840 and 1850.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eElijah F. Austin was married to Phoebe Minton and they had nine children: Rebecca, born 1841 married Henry Cagle; Joseph B. born in 1843 became a farmer living in the upper part of Sequatchie County; Thomas J. born 1849 (August 4) married Sarah Hale; James H. born 1854; John B. born 1856; Joel B. born 1858 and John L. born 1862 died at age 29. Thomas J. Austin was reared on the home farm and received his education in the school of the neighborhood and early in life became familiar with all the duties which fall to the lot of one in farming. He married on July 22, 1869 Sarah Hale, who was born near Pikeville on October 17, 1849, the daughter of the Reverend James Hale. In the 1840 Census, the name and age of the pensioners from the American Revolution or the War of 1812 are also given in the household where they are residing, but this is found on the second page and is frequently overlooked by the casual reader.
