This book sketches those changes from the perspective of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House in Alexandria, Virginia. Constructed in 1775, the Meeting House survived the Revolutionary War, and the Scottish and Scots-Irish members of the congregation played leading roles in establishing the small port town of Alexandria. Located directly across the Potomac River from Washington, D.C., Alexandria has had a unique perspective on the development of the United States. Mount Vernon is only seven miles south of Alexandria, and George Washington was a frequent visitor, with many dealings in the town. Members of the Meeting House congregation were among his close friends.

Daily life was very different in the eighteenth, nineteenth, and mid-twentieth centuries from what it is in the early decades of the twenty-first. This book notes the changes in living conditions in each of these four centuries as context for the narrative. The Meeting House itself has also changed substantially from century to century, as has the practice of Presbyterian worship in general and the Presbyterian observance of Christmas in particular. In the late eighteenth century, Presbyterian congregations did not observe Christmas in public worship. By the time the nation was poised on the brink of the Civil War, however, Santa Claus and Christmas trees had been introduced in popular culture, although Presbyterians still felt it inappropriate to celebrate Christmas in public worship. By the mid-twentieth century, Christmas services were held both at Alexandria's Second Presbyterian Church and at the Meeting House. And by the end of the first decade of the twenty-first, music and decorations had joined theology and education in prominent places in Presbyterian worship and in the celebration of Christmas. Mission outreach—from the local community and extending to distant lands—had also become a significant aspect of Meeting House efforts to help share the joy of the season.

Hugh M. Dr. James Muir's personal diary from 1805. Born in Ayrshire, Scotland in 1757, Rev. Muir served as the third minister of the Presbyterian Church in Alexandria, Virginia, now known as the Old Presbyterian Meeting House, from 1789 until his death in 1820. The Old Presbyterian Meeting House was originally known as Alexandria's Presbyterian Church and then as its First Presbyterian Church. Rev. Muir's diary provides a historical document that, in its account of a single calendar year in the life of one individual, both raises and answers questions about a bygone era. It also provides a historical guide to aspects of the remarkable heritage that continues to this day in Old Town Alexandria, Virginia; a heritage that exists today in the vibrant religious community of the Old Presbyterian Meeting House and in the larger community, where the streets that Muir walked, and so many of the houses and places he visited still exist. A discussion of Alexandria in 1805, an examination of the original diary and its transcription, and a biographical sketch of Rev. Muir precede the diary. Appendices include: the diary's title page and handwritten notes that appear on end pages of the diary, a list of the Bible texts of sermons by Rev. Dr. Muir during 1805 (in the order delivered), and a list of the published works of the Rev. Muir. This fascinating work is the result of research conducted to assess the potential submerged historic resource base-historic shipwrecks, harbor facilities, and other culturally relevant archaeological features-lying within and adjacent to the waters of the Alexandria waterfront, and buried beneath lands reclaimed from the river during earlier times. In order to fully understand the resource potentials from an archaeological perspective, it was first necessary to reconstruct the context of Alexandria's long maritime history from archival record. The dynamic waterfront development and the evolution of the seafaring industry of this once major maritime entrepôt are presented in a holistic manner, complete with numerous illustrations, maps, and tables.Donald Shomette is director of Cultural Resource Management, a historical consultant for the US Navy and the National Geographic Society, and a former staff member for the Library of Congress.

Donald G. After its incorporation in 1779, the old trustee form of government was eliminated, and council-mayor system was implemented. Then in 1922, the government changed to a council-city manager system. Unfortunately, without the existence of a comprehensive city directory, the identity of these civil servants has remained relatively obscure. To remedy this situation, the author has prepared (this roster) of Alexandria city officialdom. This listing is prefaced by an overview of the political changes in Alexandria. The names and dates of service of the Alexandria trustees, who were responsible for the government of Alexandria from 1749 until 1779, are listed alphabetically. The remaining officials are listed by year. The roster of officials of the council-mayor form of government includes justices of the Hustings Court, which was abolished in 1800. In 1790, Hodgson bought a house at 207 Prince Street. After his marriage to Portia Lee (1777-1840) in May 1799, he conducted a dry goods business on the first floor, using the upper floors for family quarters. From the Day Book presented here, it is clear that Hodgson's commercial ventures were spread across a vast area, with Hodgson frequently involved with ship cargoes from the Caribbean, England, and the Continent. Hodgson's business thrived, and in 1806 he acquired a second house on Prince Street, between Fairfax and Water Streets, to handle the growing stocks of goods. In addition, Hodgson maintained a frame warehouse adjoining his primary business at 207 Prince Street.

More than 700 items are listed in Hodgson's inventory of goods, ranging from the finest livery for ladies and gentlemen to the ordinary nails, axes, adzes, and tools for the workman. Through his wife, Hodgson had access to the elite of the city at that time, and the most notable of his clients was Martha Washington. He also conducted long-range ventures in the Caribbean and Europe. The entries not only give an accurate account of business dealings of the time, but they offer a rare window into the lifestyle and buying habits of early nineteenth century townfolk. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courthouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls.

The present work is an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in each county and independent city, as well as the accompanying description of the location of the said property. We have not included the number of acres, taxes assessed, or any transactions between landowners which may have been noted on the tax rolls; also, in many cases the geographic location was provided as "adjacent to John Smith", etc. and, while useful many times to a genealogist, was considered to be beyond the objectives of this project. The reader is encouraged to consider the information here-in as an "outline" of early landowners in Virginia rather than a "text" due to the year-to-year variation in information provided to the clerk (or recorded by the clerk), omissions, lack of "identifiers" to determine if "same name" was also "same person" within a district or across districts, marginal quality/clarity (in a few cases) of the microfilm copy, and, not least, errors on the part of either the original clerks or the current author while transcribing.

Some of the approaches to utilizing the 1815 landowner information include:

observe distinct clusters of the same surname within a county in order to clarify the common surnames such as "Smith", "Anderson", etc;

identify non-resident landowners and their county (or state) of residence (these people often being former residents of the current county);

determine neighbors with different surnames (often being relatives);

use the 1815 information as a "bridge" from the 18th and 19th century deed/will books to the 17th and 18th century land grants/patents in the county;

evaluate the 1810 to 1840 census information which generally grouped neighbors;

substitute this information for missing deed/will books in the "burned" counties; and, clarify/enhance vague deed/will information in the counties with more complete records.

FORMAT OF PRESENTATION: Each entry is listed as: Surname, name, personal identifiers (if any); location/place-name of land; miles/direction from the 1815 courthouse. Its population nearly doubled from 2,700 inhabitants in 1790 to 4,900 souls in 1800. Its harbor was filled with brigs, schooners and ships of the line which traversed the high seas and engaged in international and coastwise trade. The streets were lined with substantial brick houses and the ‘sound of the hammer and trowel were at work every where...’ In 1796, a visitor, the Duc de La Rouce Foucauld commented that: ‘Alexandria is beyond all comparison the handsomest town in Virginia — indeed is among the finest in the United States.’

“Besides its commercial and maritime importance, Alexandria was a center of early church activity. Scottish merchants and factors brought with them the Presbyterian faith and a meeting house was erected on South Fairfax street in 1772. The Protestant Episcopal Church functioned as the official state church of Virginia until it was disestablished in 1784. As early as the mid-1760’s the Episcopalians had erected a ‘Chapel of Ease’ near Princess and Royal streets. The early church then fell into a state of disrepair and James Parsons and John Carlyle were hired by the vestry to construct a substantial new one at the head of Cameron street.
