Who were the ancestors of John Brown? Every Brown researcher can empathize with the dilemmas inherent in tracing that name. It would seem that most villages in early Virginia had a John Brown in every generation. The author's John Brown was said by family tradition to have \"come from\" Bedford County. Was that true? Bedford County in Virginia was on the path of the great Wagon Road which led from Philadelphia to Harper's Ferry to Tennessee. Uncounted scores of immigrants moved westward along that road, settling in a county for a few years before moving farther west. Bedford County records reflect that pattern of settling and moving, settling and moving. Many Brown families passed through Bedford County on their way west and left recorded evidence of having been there. Many of their family members, slaves, neighbors and business associates were named with them. Some 606 other surnames are associated with Brown in those records. The author studied all available records, and was able to rule out that the ancestors of her John Brown were from Bedford County. He was the descendant of several generations of pioneer settlers in Montgomery County, Virginia, but had married into a family which had moved there from Bedford County. Every genealogist knows that to rule out is to get closer to the truth. This collection of abstracted records is intended as a finding tool for researchers. Bedford was an important county with a heavy slave population (6,147), and the census records a large total population in excess of 16,000. The manuscript itself is in very poor condition. From the Introduction: Of ninety-four county and municipal census records for 1810 transcribed to date, Bedford posed the greatest number of challenges in style, readability, condition of the manuscript, and over-all presentation of data. William Key, the assistant marshall and enumerator for the county, chose a unique method of recording the data. Each folio was divided into two columns (cf. Folio 452, page vii), and this allowed 40-45 names to be transcribed per sheet. Unfortunately, there are smaller margins remaining on the left and right, and portions of the edges have fallen away over the centuries. In addition, the manuscript suffered from both water damage and a resultant severe fading along the outside portions. This is especially true for the left-hand column of each sheet, where many of the names are illegible. Finally, in an effort to prevent further deterioration, early archival conservationists placed reinforcing tape along the bottom edges (and occasionally the right edge). In almost every case, the tape is so opaque that the line of data it covered was lost. The two page examples reproduced in the introduction (folios 452 and 453) actually are \"good\" sheets, and many others were more seriously degraded.\u003c\/p\u003e \u003cp\u003eTwo unnumbered sheets were discovered in the transcription, the first following folio 457 and the second following folio 458. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courthouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls.\u003c\/p\u003e\n\u003cp\u003eThe present work is an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in each county and independent city, as well as the accompanying description of the location of the said property. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data.
