The marriage bonds were transcribed by Mr. Gott from the typed copies of the original bonds for the period, 1759-1848; and from the marriage register for 1848-1854. These data were then supplemented with the data from the ministers' returns for the period 1785-1848 as extracted from an unpublished typescript prepared by Mildred S. Vorwaller in 1965. The marriage bonds usually provide the names of groom, bride, bondsmen, and sometimes parents or guardians, as well as the date of the bond. This information was compared with the marriage returns and any differences or additional information was noted. The differences usually consist of variations in the spelling of names, and the additional information usually consists of the date of marriage and the minister's name. The data are arranged alphabetically by the name of the groom, and there is a cross-index to brides and others named. This composite volume of marriage data should be a boon to Fauquier County researchers.

John K. Willliam Turner's lease was for the term of his life and the lives of his two sons, John Meridy and William. The seven chapters of this book contain the seven generations of the descendants of John Meridy Turner (1747-1815). Each chapter begins with a summary of the Turner family in the particular geographical area being dealt with in each generation. This Turner family lived in Fauquier and Shenandoah Counties, Virginia; Licking County, Ohio; Scotland and Clark Counties, Missouri; Clackamas County, Oregon; and Columbia County, Washington. The Modified Register system is used for the genealogy and all statements are fully documented in notes at the end of each chapter. There is significant information included on the allied lines of Brown, Cooke, Crown, Martin, and Smith. The book is illustrated with ahnentafel charts, maps, tables, land tracts, and photos. A full-name index makes the book easy to use. Anyone who has worked on the Turner family in Virginia knows the difficulty of working on a common-place name. At least three other Turner families were living in Fauquier County during the same time period that John Meridy Turner was there. This book will help you in learning what resources are available and how to proceed if research has led you to these Turners. Research on this Turner family extended over twenty-eight years. The author won the National Genealogical Society Family History Writing Contest in 1987 and has previously published four books of abstracted records with Heritage Books.

Gwen Boyer Bjorkman

(1994), 2014, 5.5" x 8.5", paper, index, 174 pp.

ISBN: 9780788401459

101-B0145

An Historical Vignette of Oak Hill, Fauquier County: Home of John Marshall, Chief Justice of the United States and Native Son of Fauquier County

This is the history of a house, of the land on which it was built, of those who built it and lived in it, and of the circumstances that made it as we see it today. The original builder would be considered an important historical personage in his own right, were it not for the overshadowing greatness of his son. It is a house of great architectural interest. It is, in fact, two houses. The first one, built in 1773, is a rare example of a Fauquier County farmhouse of the colonial period, left virtually unaltered by succeeding generations. The second house, built in 1818, is a sophisticated temple-form structure of the Federal period. It retains most of its original finely-detailed woodwork. It is noteworthy that the earlier house has not, as is so often the case, been replaced or absorbed by the later, larger house. Instead, both have survived, affording an interesting comparison between the differing tastes of two generations, one in the middle of the eighteenth century and one of the early nineteenth century. The history of the land extends back some forty years before the first house was built, and that is the starting point for this book.

T. Is your ancestor within these pages?

Volume IV, the Master Index, allows you to compare, and follow through the years, the changes in surnames and family descendants from each Will Book. This index makes it easier to research slave owners and makes it possible to follow some slaves from one owner to another. Having all the indexes in a single volume simplifies and defines which Will Books you need to explore. Many times an account or will was recorded by the court years after it had been prepared. For example: Charles Martin's committee account was dated from 27 Dec. 1853 to 12 Aug. 1854 but recorded in Will Book 27 on 18 Feb. 1857, not Will Book 25. First names have been standardized in order to make it easier to search for a name. This series provides researchers with easy access to information that could otherwise require several months of reading through microfilm. This series is a MUST for researchers of slaves and/or owners of Fauquier County, Virginia.

Sandra Barlau

2014, 5.5" x 8.5", paper, index, 136 pp.

ISBN: 9780788455841

101-B5584

Five (5) essential volumes of vital genealogical information on one CD. The weakness of Hoppin's evidence that identifies 1792 John Wright as the son of 1729/30 John Wright is discussed; and documentation for the ancestral lines of the Wright DNA project participants, recent DNA results, and the probability that a non-marital event tainted the Y-DNA of the descendants of 1792 John Wright or the descendants of 1655 Francis Wright are all examined. Documentation identifies 1713 Francis Wright of Westmoreland County as a descendant of 1655 Francis Wright of Yorkshire County, England, and identifies John Wright of Westmoreland County, Virginia, as the possible father of John Wright of Fauquier County, Virginia. First, to make Fauquier County, Virginia's hitherto unpublished colonial tithable lists available to the research public; secondly, to provide an explanation for the tax and fiscal laws that brought the tithable lists into being. The tax lists cover the colonial Virginia time period into the Revolutionary War. Designed to meet the needs of researchers--family historians, professional genealogists, historians, African-American family researchers as well as those interested in colonial Virginia history. The book is organized into three parts--includes a historical introduction and transcripts of Fauquier's nineteen never before published colonial tax lists of 1759-1782. Four different indexes are included: 1759-1778 list, 1759-1778 tithables, slave holders and slaves, 1782 tithables, 1782 slave holders and slaves. Officials mentioned in this work include Thomas Marshall, George Lamkin, John Marshall, Gilson Foote, John Kirk, Armistead Churchill, John Kirk, William Grant, John Moffet, Thomas Keith, William Pickett, William Blackwell, Charles Chilton, John Blackwell, and William Heale. These tax lists were discovered in a 1994 preservation and repair project funded by the Library of Virginia. The Tax and Fiscal records were done by the Justices who took the lists of Tithables from Fauquier's residents and by the Sheriff and other officials who took the tax and were responsible for their transmission to the colonial capital. The colonial tax lists, those taken before 1782 were loosely termed Tithable Lists--included both property and land. During and after 1782, these lists were divided into two distinct tax lists which included personal property tax lists and land tax lists.

Joan W.
