Many sources were used to compile this listing, including church records, minister's returns, marriage licenses, newspaper articles, and court records. The marriages are arranged alphabetically by groom's surname and include records for whites as well as blacks (many of whom had acquired surnames after the Civil War). The reader may find such information as: date of marriage, parents of the participants, occupation, race, previous marital status, residence, date and place of birth and death, and military affiliation. When the name of a church in which the ceremony took place is specifically mentioned in the marriage document, it is included in this listing. The index provides easy reference to brides. A small section of Spotsylvania County births is also included, taken from an 1853 to 1868 birth registration book. The author has refined this list to include only those people for whom a full name was given, and who lived past infancy. Many Negroes listed in this birth record did not have last names; those that could be easily traced without a surname are included here. Weedon himself was an ardent patriot, and those of like mind gathered at his establishment to debate the issues of the times. It was here that Thomas Jefferson convened his friends to draft bills of religious freedom and public schools which later were enacted by the Virginia General Assembly. This Virginia statute inspired the First Amendment to the United States Constitution. Weedon's account book is a window into the daily life of the tavern and its visitors. The Ledger book reproduced here is more than a mere listing of goods and services. It is a time capsule of life in Virginia during the early Revolutionary period. What people did, ate, and purchased speaks volumes about the personalities of the individuals, and any genealogist with ancestors in this area can begin to see a complete picture of life during the late colonial period. These early land tax laws required a tax commissioner in each district of a county to record a list of the names of persons owning land or town lots, the quantity of land owned and its value, and the amount of tax owed. By 1813, a brief geographic description (usually citing an adjacent stream, road, or other landmark) was required; in 1814, the distance and direction from the courthouse for each parcel was also added to the tax rolls.

The present work is an alphabetical listing of all 1815 landowners found in each county and independent city, as well as the accompanying description of the location of the said property. Much of this was requisitioned from the civilian population and certificates were issued payable in either continental or state funds, depending on the units supplied, upon presentation to court authorities. Thousands of these certificates issued to Virginians were duly entered by the courts, and they provide a fascinating insight into the period of the Revolution.

These "Publick" Claims booklets contain interesting and useful information about the contributions of ordinary people to the Revolutionary War. They provide some details of people's service in the militia or as guards for prisoners of war; they indicate where some bodies of troops were at particular times; and they identify providers of horses, wagons, cattle, grain, or other supplies. Much of the information in these booklets cannot be found anywhere else, which makes the surviving records particularly valuable. Also remarkable is the fact that records survived from virtually every county in the state at that time with the exception of the newly formed Kentucky counties. This makes the collection even more valuable in covering areas which heretofore in this time period have suffered from a lack of personal data. The "Virginia Publick Claims" are published by counties. In addition to a faithful transcription by Janice Luck Abercrombie and the late Richard Slatten, a complete index is provided for each county booklet. Due to the city's importance to trade during the American Revolution, it was severed from Spotsylvania in 1782 and given its own court system. This is the time frame when the marriages within this book begin. Of special note, these marriages cover a greater area than the city's corporate limits. Many Caroline and Stafford County residents got their marriage bonds in Fredericksburg. Let it be known that Fredericksburg was a unique and special trade center for this area of Virginia.
