North Carolina Roster of Soldiers in War of 1812, 1812-1814.
James L. Douhart.
This volume is a reprint of a collection of names authorized by the North Carolina legislature in 1851 to list all of the soldiers who fought in the War of 1812. There are between 14,000 and 15,000 soldiers listed in this collection. Due to the poor condition of the original printing, this was retyped and finally indexed with a full name index. This is the only full collection of the names with a full name index.
The original publisher was concerned with the spelling of each name and put a disclaimer to the effect that the names were spelled just as they received them from each of the county listings. We honored that disclaimer and retained the exact spelling as given, but could have corrected many of these errors. This was a choice we made to allow the reader the choice of the correction.
The soldiers are listed in the county units in which they served and every county had at least one unit with some having multiple fighting units. At the time of the listing, not all present counties were formed but all that were in existence at the time had units. This is one of the best listing of soldiers in the War of 1812 found anywhere.
