Three-quarters of the cases are either debt (by bond, contract, or covenant) or assault and battery (with or without trespass). The assault and battery cases seem to appear after the elections and at the same time as indictments for selling liquor without a license (probably due to fights as the result of too much alcohol). There is one case of murder, one for larceny, and several for ejectment (removal of land holders due to overlapping land claims caused by Virginia's metes and bounds land system). Every effort has been made to include all the names recorded and the case information if listed. Oftentimes, juniors and seniors are listed adjacent to one another and recorded on the same day. When a taxpayer is noted as "exempt", it can be a clue to someone holding a particular position in government or being elderly, infirm, or for some other reason no longer required to pay the tithable tax. Women, both black and white, appear occasionally as heads of households when they own property in their own right or as the widow of a property owner.

Another valuable source for filling in information about an ancestor is the land tax record, and especially the one for 1815. In that year, the enumerators began to add the location of the property in relation to the county court house. Roger Ward has abstracted all of the 1815 land tax records. This is especially important in the case of Cabell, which was a parent to all or part of eight West Virginia counties (Cabell, Wayne, Lincoln, Putnam, Mingo, Logan, Boone and Wyoming).

The 1810 substitute census list for Cabell County contains 487 households, 524 tithables, both white and free black, and 122 slaves over the age of twelve, and 1,169 horses.

Example from this volume:

Kincaid, Samuel Jr. 0 – 0 – 5
Kincaid, Samuel Sr. 3 – 5 – 11
Kincaid, Samuel (blacksmith) 1 – 0 – 0

John Vogt

2011, 5.5" x 8.5", Paper, 7 pp.

107-CBPP

Cabell County, West Virginia was created in 1809 from the western part of Kanawha County.
