Chatham County is located on the coast and the Savannah River. Savannah is located in this county, near the mouth of the Savannah River. Founded by James Oglethorpe in 1733, Savannah is the oldest city in Georgia and has been a major port since the early 19th century. The historical portion of this material continues up to the time of the original publication in the mid-1880s.
