Reminiscences of William G. Allen: McKenzie’s Fighting Fifth.
Rhea County Historical and Genealogical Society.
Compiled by Bettye J. Broyles and Carl Campbell.
“Several years ago, a large collection of hand-written histories compiled by William G. Allen was donated to the Rhea County Historical Society by a descendant of Mr. Allen’s, along with a large scrapbook containing numerous newspaper articles written by him. These have proved to be a ‘gold mine’ of information on the Civil War. …The articles are being published for their special ‘flavor’ as only someone who lived through the war could have written. Where there was a published article and the original hand-written copy, the two have been compared. …This publication contains the articles concerned with his service during the Civil War.”
William G. Allen, one of the members of the Fighting Fifth wrote widely on the unit in the years following the war. These pages present his writings as they appeared in various newspapers. “Most of the articles about the Civil War were published in the Dayton Herald during 1911, 1912, and 1918.”
Several facsimile reprints of original documents and an index to full-names and places add to the value of this work.
