On January 10, 1921 a fire of unknown origin in the basement of the Department of Commerce building destroyed all but 1% of the 1890 census. For more than a century, historians and genealogists alike have sought to find ways to replace or at least regather some of this lost data. One of the most valuable sources which have survived are the state personal property tax lists which provide a summary of each household.
