The author traces the rise and progress of the town beginning around 1700 and continuing until 1859. Chapters include: events in Connecticut preceding Litchfield's settlement, incidents of the first settlement, alarms and measures of defense, events preceding and during the Revolution, ecclesiastical matters and an appendix which lists county and state officials, judges, commissioners, justices, senators, attorneys, and biographical addenda.
