Colonial Families of New Jersey, Volume 1: Middlesex and Somerset Counties

This compilation is based on various sources, including publications that are inaccessible to the average genealogist, or nearly so. Many of the records have been published, but so long ago as to escape the notice of current researchers. A major source of records were those compiled, edited and published by Orra Eugene Monnette in First Settlers of Ye Plantations of Piscataway and Woodbridge, Olde East New Jersey, 1664-1714, 7 volumes in a format similar to that of most genealogy societies today. There were 350 copies published between 1930-1935. Wright draws on Monnette’s work, which included original records of the town registers, church records, and cemetery records. The lineages are now organized in an easy-to-use format, with extended coverage based on additional data and corrections.

In addition to Monnette’s published work and that of Dally (Woodbridge and Vicinity), Wright draws on many of the church records have been published in the New Jersey Historical Society Proceedings and the Genealogical Magazine of New Jersey. Probate material was taken from Calendar of New Jersey Wills, and from East Jersey Deeds, the New Jersey Archives 1st Series, Vol. XXI, 1664-1703. The following families are covered in this first volume: Alston/Elstone, Ayers, Bonham, Cutter, Drake, Dunham, Dunn, Eastwood, Eddie, Fitz Randolph (Randolph), Folsom, Freeman, Giles, Gilman, Hull, Laing, Manning, Martin, Moores (Moore), Mundy (Monday), Pike, Robins, Rolph, Runyon, Smalley, Sutton, Tappan, Thorpe, Vail, Wooden, Worth.
