The address preserved on these pages was “delivered before the Chamber of Commerce of the City of Pittsburgh at the Pittsburgh City Charter Centennial, October 31, 1916” by William A. MacCorkle, former governor of West Virginia. The address was given at a luncheon under the auspices of the Pittsburgh Chamber of Commerce and the Historical Society of Western Pennsylvania. Mr. MacCorkle discussed the “epochs illustrating the relationship between western Pennsylvania and Virginia.” His eloquent address touched on “the movement of the people composing the decisive element of the population of the two sections; the French occupation of the Ohio Valley and the incidents following the defeat at Fort Necessity; the efforts of Washington to provide connections for travel between the two sections; the Dunmore War; the Quebec Act of 1774, and the treaty with the Indians at Fort Dunmore in 1775.”
