Elizabeth Cordelia Rider’s ancestors were among the earliest settlers of Maryland in colonial America. The first of her ancestors to come into colonial America was Edward Dorsey, thought to have arrived in Jamestown colony in 1642. This book addresses the following questions: (1) When did Elizabeth Cordelia Rider’s ancestors come to the Colonial American colonies, (2) based on when, and where they came from, can it be speculated ‘why’ they immigrated to America, and (3) how did the lives of the immigrants’ descendants culminate in bringing Elizabeth Cordelia Rider’s family to Ruxton, Baltimore County, Maryland?
This work is devoted to four family lines where the surname was carried for three or more generations: Dorsey Family (1619–1879), Downey Family (1742–1828), Jones Family (1745–1942), and Rider Family (1810–1999). It is a summary of genealogical data, a review of relevant publications and crowd-sourcing data. Information was gleaned from birth, marriage, death and burial records; newspaper obituaries and articles; passenger ship records; census records; land and tax transactions; military enlistment; wills and probate records; as well as historical books and articles of the region. A wealth of photographs, a bibliography, and a full-name index add to the value of this work.
