The Quiet Patriot is the story of the extraordinary life of Colonel Return Jonathan Meigs, originally from Middletown, Connecticut. It is also the story of the birth of the new republic of the United States, its struggle for independence, its emergence as a constitutional government, the expansion westward and southward and the handling of its Native American populations. Col. Return Jonathan Meigs was a quiet, unassuming man. He was modest, forthright and honest with a real sense of duty and honor to America. He was one of the first forty-eight pioneers to establish the first town in Ohio, an Indian Agent to the Cherokee Indians for some twenty-two years, and a friend to four presidents and two future presidents along with other U.S. Cabinet members. This narrative chronicles his heroic experiences in the Revolutionary War: the painful trek to attack Quebec with Benedict Arnold; Meigs’s capture, imprisonment then parole by the British; and the daring raid on the British depot at Sag Harbor, Long Island. Meigs’s war experiences also cover his colonelcy of the 6th Connecticut “Leather Cap” Regiment; duty in the Hudson Highlands; the bold attack on Stony Point under General “Mad” Anthony Wayne; and the suffering of his troops at winter encampments.
