The Ocoee Land District is that portion of land south of the Hiwassee and Tennessee Rivers to the State of Georgia, along the Georgia border and East to South Carolina. Before the New Echota Treaty, this land was part of the Cherokee Nation. It was ceded to the United States when the treaty was ratified on the 23rd of May, 1836. The Ocoee Land District was established at Cleveland, Bradley County, Tennessee, on the first Monday of October 1838 and was closed in 1903.
