Located in upper east Tennessee where Virginia, North Carolina and Tennessee come together, this area was settled as early as 1770 with travelers coming across the mountains into the valleys of Johnson County. At an early era Nathaniel Taylor came to Roane Creek and established an iron works here. The early county seat was named for him but later the name was changed to Mountain City. These are the first marriages recorded after the county was created in 1836.
