Covers abstracts from Deed Books 1-5 (1772-1781) and Will Books 1-3 (1772-1805). Berkeley County was formed from Frederick County, Virginia in 1772. Deed abstracts include the grantor(s) and grantee(s), the consideration, the price and any stated terms, description of the land including size (acreage) and location, relationships, miscellaneous information, names of witnesses, locality and relevant dates.
Will book abstracts include essential dates, the name of the testator - the person who made the will, any and all persons named in the will in the order named, in direct connection with any relationships stated for those persons to either the testator or to each other, and essentials of the bequests and devises made to these persons, miscellaneous information, name(s) of the executor(s) and any relationships or connections which are stated between him (them) and the testator. There is enough information in each abstraction to help you determine if it would be worth your while to pursue a copy of the actual document from the courthouse.
The book also includes chart designating (West) Virginia counties, dates formed, and counties from which the counties were formed. Index.
