This is, according to Louise Phelps Kellogg, is "a classic of Wisconsin history," It is in part an autobiogaphy of the author, being an account of the years 1830 to 1833 spent at Fort Winnebago and in other chapters provided the reminiscences of other members of the family including two who were present for the Chicago massacre in 1812. This is an important work dealing with the early history of Wisconsin.
