In Sonoma County, the earliest naturalization records date from 1841 and consist of both declarations of intention and petitions for naturalization. State, district and local courts handled the process of naturalization up to 1906 when the Federal Govt. established the Immigration and Naturalization Service. More than 6,600 persons applied for naturalization in Sonoma Co. pre-1906. Nine index books, containing records spanning 1841-1906, were discovered in the Sonoma County Archives in 1996.
