Author Marlene Jan McDerment

Marlene Jan McDerment first became interested in history and genealogy in 1976, when she inherited her great-grandmother’s journal. In the years that followed, she explored her new-found passion and fine-tuned her research skills.

Marlene is a member of several national, state, and local genealogical societies where her research abilities are highly regarded. Since 1991, she has held offices in Daughters of the American Revolution chapters, and local genealogical societies. She earned her B.A. in Education in 1995, and began working as a professional Research Consultant.  Her series of interviews, in conjunction with the National Society DAR and the Alliance for American Quilts, preserved in the Library of Congress. She initiated the “One-On-One” program at the Ohio Genealogical Society in 2010. In 2013, she received the Presidential Silver Volunteer Service Award from President Barack Obama.

Marlene’s interest in the Revolutionary War period, and her research capabilities, have enabled her to locate soldiers and patriots who have been forgotten. The discovery of these men and women led her to begin a series of books starting with Revolutionary Soldiers and the Wives of Soldiers with Ties to Switzerland County Indiana; Heritage Books, Inc. Her latest book, Revolutionary War Soldiers and Patriots with Ties to Ripley County Indiana, Heritage Books, Inc., will be followed by similar works concentrating in the southeastern counties of Indiana.

In addition to lecturing and teaching genealogy classes, she is known for her ability to break down those “brick walls” that stymie the most experienced genealogists. She has an innate ability to go beyond the obvious.  Marlene Jan McDerment currently lives in central Ohio where she has access to major historical research facilities. Her email address is mjmcderment@aol.com.
