Baltimore [Maryland] City Jail War Docket - Jerry M. Hynson. During the Civil War the role of the Baltimore City Jail was expanded from that of a facility serving the civilian needs of Baltimore City and Balitmore County, Maryland, to that of a combination civilian and military facility for the incarceration of prisoners. From 1862 through 1865 prisoners were held in the jail under various military charges including espionage, blockade running, smuggling, illegal recruiting of soldiers, and unspecified political charges. Other prisoners included captured Confederate soldiers who had been participants in the battles of Kernstown, Gettysburg, and skirmishes in the Shenandoah Valley. The Baltimore City Jail Docket, held by the Maryland State Archives in Annapolis, Maryland, presents a record of a large number of such prisoners held from 1862 to 1865.
This volume summarizes the docket entries so that family historians will have another reference in their search fo their ancestors. The entries are arranged in alphabetical order for convenience. Information provided includes date of committal, charges, military unit, and date of transfer or release.
