CD: History of the Town of Manchester, Massachusetts, Essex County, Massachusetts, 1645-1895 - Rev. D. F. Lamson. Written in response to the 250th anniversary of the town, the author has produced a readable, historically accurate narrative on Manchester, Massachusetts. More attention is given to the earlier decades rather than the later, and the life of this small community is set within the history of the larger context of the times. Englishmen first settled around Jeffreys' Creek in 1640 and petitioned for the establishment of their own town in 1645. After first describing the area prior to 1645, the author then launches into the history of the town. He covers such national events as the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War as well as more local happenings such as the fishery and cabinet-making businesses, schools and churches, and the use of the town as a summer-time resort. Appendices provide a more focused look at various aspects of the town's history. For instance, a typical Sunday's activities are described, historical sketches of the cemeteries and some inscriptions are included, military rosters cover the major wars listed above, police regulations provide a look at the legal side of the town's operation, and the town officials are listed for 1645 through 1895. A new, full-name index has been added to supplement the original index. The book is presented as graphic images, so the user sees the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a "real" book. There is no electronic index, and there is no electronic text to search. However, numerous electronic bookmarks (like those seen at the left) have been added which make it easy to move through the book.
