CD: A History of the Pioneer and Modern Times of Ashland County, Ohio - H. S. Knapp. Mr. Knapp begins his history with a brief introduction to Ashland County before its settlement and the hardships faced by the first pioneers. From there he details the organization of the county and its townships regarding agriculture, elections, taxable properties, establishment of churches, cemeteries, social and religious organizations, and justices of the peace. Most chapters include reminiscences of the pioneers of each township, thus giving the reader insight into the names and lives of the original families, including a chapter on Jonathan Chapman also known as Johnny Appleseed. An everyname index provides easy access to the people who settled in Ashland County and helped develop it from its first settlement to 1863. The book is presented as graphic images, so the user sees the work just as it was originally published. It is intended to look and function very much like a "real" book. There is no electronic index, and there is no electronic text to search. However, numerous electronic bookmarks have been added which make it easy to move through the book. Image numbers will match the page numbers for all of the main text, as well as the index. Any unnumbered portraits and illustrations are at the back of the actual file, to keep page numbering consistent.
