Marriages of Orange County, Virginia, 1757-1880

$28.50

Orange County, Virginia, records are remarkably intact, with the earliest marriages recorded in 1757. Unfortunately, this does not mean that every marriage performed in Orange County was recorded in the bonds, ministers’ returns and marriage licenses in the county courthouse. Some marriages were recorded in fee books and deed books, and other records may exist among private papers that were never recorded. The information preserved on these pages was extracted from courthouse bonds, ministers’ returns and marriage licenses. Some entries include additional information gleaned from Orange County death records and the William and Mary Quarterly (1st and 2nd series). Entries are arranged alphabetically by the groom’s surname and typically include the full name of the groom, the full name of the bride; date of marriage; name of minister and/or sometimes other family members in attendance or bondsman (typically for the bride). Some entries also include age, place of birth, place of marriage, place of residence, occupation, parent(s) names and/or other valuable data. “Person of Color” is listed for some entries. A list of ministers is provided. A full name index adds to the value of this work.
