Born in the quiet, rural farming community of Smithsburg, Maryland, Edgar Irving Brenner attended Pennsylvania College in Gettysburg, graduating in 1885. From there he attended Yale, where in 1886 he died in an ice-skating accident. A prolific and sensitive literary writer and a poet of no small measure. He wrote more than 150 poems, sometimes under pseudonym of Diogenes Blank, Jr.
