$29.00

llinois began as a vaguely defined county in Virginia, created in 1778 to accommodate the inhabitants of Virginia living north of the Ohio River. This detailed work covers the history of the region from that time through the early years of statehood. There are several maps, including a large folding one showing the settlements along the Mississippi River in “Upper Louisiana” in 1796. This work is extensively documented and there is a lengthy bibliography. It was first published as Volume V of the Chicago Historical Society Collections. The author was on the staff of Pacific University, Pennsylvania University, the University of Wisconsin, and the Oregon Historical Society.
