Newton County, located in central Mississippi, was created in 1836 from Neshoba County which had been formed, in turn, from the Choctaw Cession of 1830. This history begins with the original Native American occupants of the land and then chronicles the first sixty years of white settlement. Subjects covered include the Civil War, Reconstruction, racial conflict, rosters of prominent men in the county, and the development of such social aspects as newspapers, schools, religious denominations, and agriculture. A new full name index adds to the value of this work.
