In the early days after the Civil War, two children orphaned by the conflict are smuggled in the night by Isaiah, their freed slave, to Cumberland, Mississippi. To spare them being sent to an orphanage, he takes them to their Uncle John, a Confederate soldier who had lost a leg at the Battle of Franklin. Uncle John accepts his new family with open arms, but on of the children is not so willing to accept these strange new circumstances. Young Matthew, just 12 years old, is filled with grief over the loss of his parents and his happy life in Memphis. On Christmas Eve, Matthew embarks on a journey to find the home he does not know he has already found.
