The author approaches his history of the Province of Quebec from two sides - institutional and revolutionary - with the Quebec Act of 1774 as the central point. About 100 pages are given over to a detailed look at the Act itself, covering such points as its origins; its aims concerning boundaries, religion, civil law, and legislative assembly; and its application. (The Quebec Act of 1774 as well as the Quebec Revenue Act of 1774 are given in full in an appendix.) Nearly fifty pages are devoted to the effect this Act had on the American colonies during their Revolutionary War.
