This story is based, for the most part, on the author's experiences before, during, and after his tour in Vietnam, 1969-1970. Wayne Christiansen's service as a United States Navy Hospital Corpsman with the United States Marine Corps began in November 1969 at the height of the Vietnam War and ended with his departure a year later. His unit's assignment as part of the Combined Action Program was to deny the North Vietnamese Army access to key villages, gain the confidence of the local populace in order to acquire information, and assist with local village improvements. Christiansen served as the unit's "doc" and as the village "doctor." The last part of his tour was at the First Medical Battalion, a Navy Hospital staffed with corpsmen rather than nurses.
This book is well written, with such an enthralling story, it is hard to put down. Some of the characters are fictional but are based on real people; some situations have been altered to work with the narrative. The underlying spirit and emotions are real.
