Volumes One and Two, presented as a single volume, is divided into five parts. Part One provides a general history of Western Massachusetts including chapters on the Indians and the pioneers; King Philip's War and the 1676 Campaign; William Pynchon; the Shays Rebellion; the Civil War, the Spanish-American War and the World Wars; and the Hampshire and Hampden Canal. Part Two covers the history of Hampshire County; Part Three-Berkshire County; Part Four-Franklin County; and Part Five-Hampden County. Volumes Three and Four present a biographical history of the region. Volumes One and Two include many illustrations of famous people and places and an historical index, while Volumes Three and Four include hundreds of portraits to highlight the text and share a fullname index.
