CD: History of Wachovia in North Carolina: The Unitas Fratrum or Moravian Church in North Carolina During A Century and a Half... 1752-1902 - John Henry Clewell, Ph.D. Wachovia was a large tract encompassing the modern Winston-Salem area in North Carolina which was purchased by the Moravian Church from Lord Granville for the purpose of establishing a religious community. The first settlement was made by members from the church in Bethlehem, Pennsylvania, in 1753. This volume provides a detailed history of the settlement of the area based on the original Moravian records and manuscripts in the Wachovia Archives. These are some membership lists, enumerations of early settlers, and extensive quotations from original sources. About thirty-five pages at the back of the volume review the history of the Moravian Church, and present lists of major and minor church officials. The volume is attractively illustrated with several maps, diagrams, pen and ink sketches, and photographs.
