A French and Indian raiding party sacked Deerfield in 1703, victimizing Puritan minister John Williams and his family. He spent two and a half years as a captive in Quebec, and wrote this autobiographical account of the ordeal in 1706 upon his release. This volume also includes the related 1905 work by George Sheldon, Heredity and Early Environment of John Williams, "The Redeemed Captive", which provides biographical details of Williams' youth, education and early adulthood as well as background information into the Puritan faith.
