Geographical Districts and Subdistricts

This preliminary inventory (in five volumes) contains the records of the field establishments of the Army in the continental United States. "Volume III describes the records of geographical districts with two exceptions: those districts and subdistricts whose records formed parts of geographical division and department successions of command described in volume I and those whose records formed parts of polyonymous successions of commands, 1861-70, described in volume II of this inventory. The districts and subdistricts in this volume are arranged alphabetically. The index includes all districts and subdistricts whose records are described in volumes I-III. Because this index is a compilation of the districts and subdistricts named in the indexes in volumes I and II and of those listed in the contents in volume III, it provides the user with a single index to all districts and subdistricts."
