Polyonymous Successions of Commands, 1861-70: Record Group 393

"In this volume the descriptions of the records of certain polyonymous successions of commands for the period 1861-1870 are identified only by a number because such successions of command are too long to be identified in any other way…As in volume I, there appears in the inventory, before the title of the series describing the records, each succession of command under the control number, the dates of the command, and the names of the principal commanders. The records of subcommands (e.g.) brigades) are described in the same place. Since the records described in this volume are primarily those of tactical units, the index is arranged to show each command on the department, army, and army corps level in such a manner as to reveal the internal organization of these three types of commands. Insofar as possible, the districts, divisions, brigades, reserves, U.S.C.T., corps, commands, U.S. Forces, detachments, defenses, expeditions, and a few special military installations for the war years are indexed under the superior command to reflect, as closely as possible, the organization of that command…all districts, defenses, U.S. Forces, expeditions, special commands, and the few special military installations indexed under superior commands are also cross-indexed under type of command (districts, defenses, etc.)."
